“Hybrid” Work Model Announced, “Grab & Go” Food Service Continues

 

MARION COUNTY – Marion County Public Schools’ update for today includes the following actions taken related to the COVID-19 situation:

 

  • MCPS Employee Work Schedules Announced – Starting Monday, March 30, MCPS will use a “hybrid” model workplace. This means employees can choose to work from the most appropriate site for them – either from home or their regular work site. This decision was made jointly by the district and its three employee unions – MEA, MESP, and IUPAT. This hybrid model of work concludes April 15. Employees should contact their immediate supervisor if they plan to work from home.

 

  • The second day of “Grab & Go” food service saw 4,153 children served, a slight dip from yesterday’s 4,285 (revised earlier today). This means 8,306 breakfast and lunch meals were served today through the district’s 22 service kitchens and nearly 100 delivery sites district-wide.  “Grab & Go” continues until classes resume and serves ALL children 18 and under regardless of whether they walk or ride a bicycle, bus or car to school.  Children must be present to receive a meal. More stops may be added next week. To suggest additional sites, call 352.671.7050 (M-F, 7AM-4PM, wait times could be lengthy).   • The district’s at-home technology survey results include these findings:
    • 87 percent of English-speaking homes have high-speed Internet service available at home; 75 percent of Spanish-speaking homes have the same.
    • 69 percent of English-speaking homes have computer access at home; 52 percent of Spanish-speaking homes have the same.
    • The district received 26,554 responses to this online survey (26,073 English and 481 Spanish), a 61-percent response rate considering the district’s latest enrollment of 43,206 students.

 

  • DISTANCE LEARNING / ONLINE PLATFORMS– The district continues working on its distance learning / online platforms to make them available next week to students.  As noted above, not all 43,000 MCPS students have reliable Internet service at home, nor do they all have devices to use. The district is investigating options to make devices and mobile “hot spot” services available to students in underserved-Internet areas of Marion County. More details on these plans will be announced when finalized.

 

  • Supplemental learning materials for K-12 students remain available at www.marionschools.net. Learning packets for elementary students are also available in print form at all seven Walmart locations in Marion County.  School buses will also deliver these packets in Marion County including apartment complexes in several remote areas.  Similar materials for middle and high school students are also available for download at www.marionschools.net. Though school campuses are closed through April 15, learning continues during this extended time.

 

  • Elementary students can utilize the SPRING BREAK READING CHALLENGE materials available via myON.  The contest has been extended because of campus closures.  Visit this link for directions to access more than 6,000 myON books online. Books can also be downloaded on personal devices from any reliable Internet connection.
