March 24 Update - "Grab & Go" Meals Serve 3k Children on First Day

“Grab & Go” Meals Serve 3k Children on First Day

 

MARION COUNTY – Marion County Public Schools’ update for today includes the following actions taken related to the COVID-19 situation:

  • The roll-out day of free “Grab & Go” food service provided over 6,156 meals to 3,078 children 18 and under throughout Marion County. Food service workers at 22 central kitchens prepared those bagged breakfast and lunch meals that were delivered by bus drivers to nearly 100 stops in the district. This daily program continues until classes resume, and more stops may be added as the service grows. To suggest additional sites, call 352.671.7050 (M-F, 7AM-4PM, wait times could be lengthy). Families can call 211, text “FoodFL” to 877-7877, or visit SummerBreakSpot.org for their nearest serving location. Children must be present to be served.
  • Supplemental learning materials for PreK-12 students are now available at marionschools.net. Learning packets for elementary students are also available in print form at all seven Walmart locations in Marion County.  School buses will also deliver these packets in Marion County including apartment complexes in several remote areas.  Similar materials for middle and high school students are also available for download at www.marionschools.net. Though school campuses are closed through April 15, learning continues during this extended time.
  • Wednesday is the last day for parents and families to complete the district’s AT-HOME TECHNOLOGY SURVEYto help determine student technology needs.  The survey is available in both English and Spanish on the district’s home page.
  • Tomorrow, a “FOOD 4 KIDS”donation drive takes place on the Downtown Ocala Square from 7:30AM-2PM  This program benefits nearly 2,000 students and families each weekend and is sponsored by Interfaith Emergency Services. More information is available at marionschools.net
  • Elementary students can utilize the SPRING BREAK READING CHALLENGE materials available via myON.  The contest has been extended because of campus closures.  Visit this link for directions to access more than 6,000 myON books online. Books can also be downloaded on personal devices from any reliable Internet connection. 
  • DISTANCE LEARNING / ONLINE PLATFORMS will be available to students starting March 30.  However, not all 43k MCPS students have reliable Internet service at home, nor do they all have mobile devices to use. To better determine this need, parents should complete the At-Home Technology Survey discussed above and utilize supplemental learning materials made available by the district.
