MARION’S SUPERINTENDENT MAIER RECEIVES

EARLY CHILDHOOD ADVOCACY AWARD

MARION COUNTY – Dr. Heidi Maier, superintendent of Marion County Public Schools, is 2019’s Advocate Award recipient, handed out by the Florida Association for the Education of Young Children.

Maier accepted the honor at the professional organization’s annual conference today in Orlando.  In her introduction, nationally-known early childhood education expert Dr. Pam Phelps described Maier as “a superintendent who has placed their priorities in the youngest classrooms.  Many people who are privileged to hold this office are misguided about the true answer to school success and focus on testing, football and success in the upper grades.  Maier understands the importance of early childhood and why it should be our highest priority, not just as a state but nationally.”

FLAEYC awards the honor to a childhood education advocate based on the individual’s dedication to improving the quality of life for young children and their families; evidenced advocacy for children and families at the local, state and/or national level; leadership on educational and children’s issues; and professional and personal qualities clearly indicating this person is outstanding in his/her field.

Maier was elected superintendent of Marion County Public Schools in 2016 and heads its 43,000 students and 7,000 employees. She started her teaching career in 1999 and later served as the program manager of Teacher Education, associate professor of Early Childhood Education, and the University Center director at the College of Central Florida.  Maier was also an assistant professor at Barry University and a program specialist in the Office of Early Learning with the Florida Department of Education.
