‘WALK TO SCHOOL’ SAFETY EVENT SCHEDULED
FOR WEDNESDAY AT MAPLEWOOD
MARION COUNTY – Each year, dozens of people die on Marion County roadway crashes. So far, this year’s victims also include four pedestrians. Last year in Marion County, traffic accidents killed 104 people, among them 11 pedestrians and four bicyclists.
With thousands of local students walking to school every day, many parents never consider the dangers their children encounter during the trip, some potentially deadly. This is the premise for the international “Walk to School Day.”
This 23rd annual event in Marion County tests students’ and parents’ knowledge of innocent-looking scenarios posing potential dangers to children.
This year, the community-wide event takes place Wednesday, October 2, 6:30AM at Maplewood Elementary (4751 SE 24 St., Ocala, 34471). Staging and starting point for this event take place just west of the school in the nearby Shocker Park.
Sponsored by Marion County’s Community Traffic Safety Team, the event teaches children and their parents about pedestrian safety, stranger danger, physical safety, and the walking environment. The walk also encourages positive relationships and communication between parents and their children. Local community leaders and representatives from public and private entities will walk with dozens of students and parents.
