MARION COUNTY – There’s no better time than now to register children for Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) and kindergarten classes for the new school year.

VPK parents interested in summertime programs can register for the VPKS lottery now with results announced in early May.

Kindergarten parents can also register at any time.

Currently, 3,074 kids attend kindergarten in the district. For VPK, that number is 698.  Both numbers are higher than originally projected.

To register for summertime VPK, the student must be five years old by September 1, 2019; be entering kindergarten this fall; and not have utilized a “Certificate of Eligibility” (COE) yet.

Because demand is usually higher than available capacity, the district uses a lottery system to offer participation.  To be part of the lottery, parents must:

  1. Complete the New Student Online Enrollment (NSOE) / Initial Registration Application via Skyward Family Access. To log in to an existing account, visit  To request a Skyward Family Access account, visit
  2. Obtain your child’s Student ID number by taking the following documents to your child’s zoned school: 1) the student’s original birth certificate; 2) two “proof of residency” documents (NOT including a driver’s license); 3) physical and immunization records; and 4) the child’s social security card (optional).
  3. Use your child’s Student ID number to complete the VPK Lottery (School Choice Application) at and choose up to three preferred schools. Upload your child’s Certificate of Eligibility (COE) to the VPK Lottery application.  The COE must be obtained from
  4. Check your email for award notifications sent no later than May 1, 2019. Note awarded seats will be automatically declined if the parent does not accept the seat by the deadline.

This year, summer VPK classes take place Monday–Thursday, June 3–July 25, from 7:30AM–5:15PM. However, there are no classes on Thursday, July 4.  Participating elementary schools include Emerald Shores, Oakcrest, and Saddlewood,

Complimentary breakfast and lunch are part of the VPK program each day, along with a snack. Parents must provide their own transportation for VPK programs regardless of timeframe.

For assistance, advance face-to-face appointments with district personal are available by contacting the Early Learning Office at 352.236.0533.

To attend kindergarten starting this August, the same rules apply except the school choice option has already closed. To register for kindergarten, parents should complete the process online for new student enrollment (see step 1).  To determine the appropriately-zoned school, parents may contact the Student Assignment & Records Office at 352.671.7745.
