McCALL SCORES TOP HONOR
MARION COUNTY – Marion County School Board member Beth McCall received state attention this morning when she was named the 2019 School Board Member of the Year by the Florida Music Education Association.
McCall accepted the prestigious honor during an awards breakfast at the association’s 75th annual conference in Tampa.
FMEA spotlighted McCall because of her “outstanding contributions to music education throughout the state” and her “support for and commitment to high-quality music education” along with her “excellence in leadership, encouragement, and promotion of music education” according to an association news release.
Shady Hill Elementary School’s music teacher, Sondra Collins, nominated McCall for the award. McCall learned of the honor in October at a surprise presentation during a school board meeting. In that meeting, nearly all of McCall’s family was present, though she knew nothing about the announcement.
Elected to the Marion County School Board in 2016, McCall previously served as chair and vice-chair of the board. She’s credited with helping convince the community to renew its one-mill referendum supporting art, music, physical education, media services, vocational education, teacher training and retention, and school security. She was also instrumental in establishing a district-level position to oversee fine arts programs.
