School District Wins National Finance Award in its 21st Consecutive Year
MARION COUNTY – The streak continues as Marion County Public School’s Finance Department has received national recognition for its accountability and transparency efforts in its 21st consecutive year.
Dated July 9, the Chicago-based Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) awarded a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to the Finance Department. The award is based on the school district’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for fiscal year 2020. This is the highest recognition possible in the area of government accounting and finance reporting and represents a significant accomplishment by a government entity and its operation.
The Finance Department oversees the school system’s $650 million+ budget and implements financial changes based on current law.
The award recognizes the department’s “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and create incentive for others to read the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.
For the previous fiscal year (2019), Marion County Public Schools was one of just 21 school districts in Florida and 538 nationwide that received the award, placing it in the top one percent. 2020 statistics have yet to be released.
