NOW PLAYING: MCPS CELEBRATES
‘NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH WEEK’
Ocala, FL - To showcase the National School Lunch Program, which serves nearly 30 million children each day including more than 18,000 locally, Marion County Public Schools celebrates National School Lunch Week next week, October 12-16.
This year’s theme, “Now Playing: School Lunch!” puts the spotlight on the importance of a healthy school lunch in a student’s life. Menu items include some local student favorites like chicken and waffles and Big Daddy’s Pizza.
So far this school year, local cafeteria workers have served 952,179 meals including 551,308 lunches. They’re working steadfastly to reach the 23,000 daily mark.
The annual campaign highlights the nutritious foods available daily in Marion County Public Schools’ cafeterias. Students participating in the lunch program will have opportunities to win gifts and prizes throughout the week including gift cards.
School lunches offer fruits and vegetables, whole grains and milk that meet federal nutrition standards limiting fat, calories and sodium. National School Lunch Week helps school districts educate parents and students about the positive benefits of the lunch program.
The federally-funded National School Lunch Program (NSLP) started in 1946 under President Harry Truman and has fueled students for success for nearly 75 years.
The “Now Playing School Lunch” campaign is made possible by the non-profit School Nutrition Association. Parents and students can visit Marion County Public Schools’ Food and Nutrition Services website at www.marionschools.net/Domain/14546 or have fun using these hashtags on social media: #NSLW2020, #NowPlayingSchoolLunch and #SchoolLunch.
