SUPERINTENDENT RESIGNS TO FOSTER
MARION COUNTY – Superintendent of Schools Dr. Heidi Maier submitted her resignation effective 11:59PM today to smooth the transition process for the district’s newly-appointed superintendent and new school year.
Elected in 2016, Maier’s official term would have run through mid-November.
Maier shared her intention to resign last month at a school board meeting. She also emailed district employees saying she and School Board Chair Eric Cummings were “in total agreement that we need to make this change in a way that enables the continuation of the tremendous progress we have made over the last three-plus years.”
The transition plan “will avoid creating the potential organizational and statutory confusion of nearly six months of overlapping superintendents,” Maier wrote. She will consult with the new superintendent for three days following her official leave.
“It has been a pleasure – more than a pleasure - to serve the community,” Maier continued. “I will leave with a feeling of pride in the work this administration has accomplished in creating opportunities never-before imagined for our students, and giving them and their families hope.”
"I am so proud of how our entire school district team, led by our teachers, has improved our students’ test scores and moved our district from a ‘C’ to what we know would have been an ‘A’ district at the end of this school year,” Maier wrote.
In April, school board members selected Dr. Diane Gullett as the first-ever appointed superintendent in the district’s 151-year history. She takes the helm tomorrow, July 1.
“I want to be very clear to everyone -- I am Dr. Gullet’s biggest fan,” Maier said. “Dr. Gullet’s success is the success of this district and most importantly, the success of our students.”
