NORTH MARION HIGH STUDENT NAMED PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLAR

Student is One of Only Six in Florida, 161 Nationwide

MARION COUNTY – North Marion High School’s Esperance J. Han, a member of this year’s graduating class, is a Presidential Scholar as announced by the U.S. Department of Education last week.

Han and five other students in Florida were recognized for their accomplishments in academics, the arts, and career and technical education fields.

Han is the daughter of Jessi Han of Ocala and has pursued numerous academic opportunities. While being named a Presidential Scholar does not come with monetary award, it is prestigious enough to qualify students for other monetary scholarships.

Last summer, Han toured several Ivy League schools thanks to her submission and acceptance as a Quest Bridge scholar. In that program, she was matched to Yale University on a full-ride scholarship. She received the U.S. Presidential Scholar honor following her nomination by the Quest Bridge program.

This is the 60th year for the U.S. Presidential Scholars program. The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selects scholars annually based on academic success, excellence in the arts and in technical education, through essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as a demonstrated commitment to community service and leadership.

Of the 3.7 million students expected to graduate from high school this year, more than 5,700 candidates qualified for the 2024 awards determined by outstanding performance on the College Board SAT or ACT exams or through nominations made by chief state school officers, other partner recognition organizations and YoungArts, the National Foundation for the Advancement of Artists.

By Presidential Executive Order, the 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars include two students from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and U.S. families living abroad, as well as 15 chosen at-large, 20 scholars in the arts and 20 scholars in career and technical education.

The Presidential Scholars Class of 2024 will be recognized for their outstanding achievement this summer with an online recognition program.
