CREDIT RATING REMAINS POSITIVE AND STABLE FOR
MARION COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
MARION COUNTY – Fitch Ratings, a national credit ratings company, has reaffirmed Marion County Public Schools’ strong financial standing, maintaining the district’s ‘AA-’ Issuer Default Rating and ‘A+’ rating on Certificates of Participation (COPs).
These ratings reflect the district’s low long-term debt levels, steady financial management, and continued population growth, which is expected to support modest student enrollment increases.
“These credit findings reinforce our commitment to responsible financial stewardship while continuing to invest in our schools and support student success,” said Superintendent Dr. Danielle Brewer. “We are proud to maintain this strong position for our community.”
Fitch’s stable outlook signals confidence that Marion County Public Schools will maintain its current financial position while balancing growth and investment needs.
Fitch Ratings is an independent national company that predicts how likely it is that a school district, city, or company can pay its bills and debt on time. Higher grades like those of MCPS show the district is financially strong and reliable.
Fitch noted that while the district has limited ability to raise revenue independently, it has consistently managed its budget responsibly and maintained healthy reserves. The agency expects the district to continue adjusting spending as needed to keep reserves near current levels.
Fitch noted that voter approval of a 10-year dedicated sales tax will also provide a reliable funding source for school construction and renovations. The district’s ‘A+’ rating on COPs reflects standard financial risk tied to annual funding approvals.
Fitch’s most recent findings indicate the district’s strong financial management and stable reserve levels, low long-term liabilities compared to other districts, a growing population supporting future enrollment, and dedicated funding source for capital improvements.
