INTERNATIONAL WALK AND ROLL TO SCHOOL DAY SET FOR OCT. 7
MARION COUNTY – Students around the world will celebrate the 15th Annual International Walk and Roll to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 7, including those at Oakcrest Elementary School in Ocala (1112 NE 28 St. 34470).
That’s where this year’s Marion County participation centers. Oakcrest students who walk or bike to school will gather with parents and guardians nearby at the Southeastern Livestock Pavilion front parking lot (2232 NE Jacksonville Rd., Ocala) to kick off the event at 6 a.m.
Following opening remarks from district and community leaders, students and adults will travel to Oakcrest and encounter everyday scenarios along the way including questionable characters, concerning obstacles, challenging traffic patterns, even someone searching for a lost animal or two. Students will arrive to school long before the 7:35 a.m. starting bell.
The event stresses the importance of being aware of your surroundings whether walking or biking to school and teaches students to make safe, positive choices to avoid these situations. This opportunity also builds student confidence after navigating several physical activities with adults to create safer routes for walking and biking.
This year’s activities are being organized by the Marion County Community Traffic Safety Team.
