English II Syllabus
Objective
In this course students will work toward mastery of the language arts Florida standards while engaging in reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities. Students will apply critical and analytical thinking skills to demonstrate to emphasize the writing process. They will be working on writing informative, narrative, and argumentative essays. In addition, by the end of the year they will also be able to read and analyze medium to complex passages with an emphasis on the close reading process, drawing inferences, literary analysis, and vocabulary.

Required Texts and Resources
- HMH Florida Collections Grade 10
- Required texts include Shakesphere’s Macbeth
- During this course students ,ay read the following approved novel or drama selections: Catcher in the rye, To Kill A Mockingbird, and Lord of the Flies.
Materials:
1.5 inch binder, loose-leaf college ruled paper, pencil, post-it notes, dividers and highlighters.
*Note: throughout the year the student may need additional supplies to complete projects. ** Kleenex, disinfecting wipes, highlighters, pencils, and extra notebook paper would be greatly appreciated.

Grading Policy:
There are three categories of assignments in this course. They are as follows:

Homework:

10% of grade. This includes bell ringers, writing journals, and participation points

Class assignments and Quizzes:

40% of grade. This includes quizzes, literature analysis, response essays, and vocabulary.

Tests and Projects:

50% of grade. this includes tests, projects, and district writing assessments

Policies and procedures
Attendance policy-Regular attendance is necessary for academic success. Students will receive a referral on the third tardy to class. When absent, Students are responsible to locate missing work on the website or in person prior to returning to class.
Late work- Assignments are due at the beginning of the class period on the assigned due date; otherwise a late penalty may be assessed (Typical Late assignment penalty – 5 points for each day it is late (including weekends and alternate school days – A day / B day). I will not accept work up to two days late. CAT time is encouraged to come and make-up work.
Tardy Policy- Students are expected to be in the classroom and seated when the tardy bell rings; not walking through the door when the bell rings, not lingering in the hall close to the classroom when the bell rings. Any student that arrives after the bell will be marked tardy; a referral will be written on 4th
Extra credit- additional assignments will not be created as an attempt to raise a grade. There will be multiple opportunities to achieve mastery on most assignments.
Resubmissions- students can submit a request to retest form for certain assignments if the grade received fell below mastery.
Plagiarism- Failing to properly give credit for material that is not written by you is plagiarism. These offenses will result in receiving a zero for the submitted work and no make-ups.
Academic integrity- All work must be your own. Examples of academic dishonesty include but are not limited to the following: copying from a Neighbor, using electronic devices during a testing situation, and copying homework completed by another student.
Electronic device policy- Cell phones are not tolerated in class. They will remain on silent and kept out of sight during class unless used as a part of the lesson. More than two warnings the student will receive a referral. Chromebooks should be handled with care. If not used properly, students will lose this privilege.
Food & drink policy- Food and drinks other than water are not permitted in class.

Communication
Microsoft Teams: Students will be working largely with Microsoft Teams throughout the year. This is accessible from any computer, school or personal, as well as through the app for smartphones. 8.
