Welcome to English III.  This study will prepare you both for college and for the world of work.

You took English I and II in previous years.  This class builds on what you learned, and adds to them.  I know that you did not take your FSA last year.  The state is planning on giving you that graduation requirement test early in the semester.   We will spend a good bit of our first

few weeks reviewing this material so you can take the writing test.

Please do not put off assignments (reading and/or writing).  It becomes very difficult to do a good job if you procrastinate, and I DO NOT ACCEPT LATE WORK without a penalty.  I know you have a lot of work from other people, but I will give you plenty of time.  Please get your work to me on time.

Outside work is required. There is no way to do all that is necessary without your active involvement at home

Essays - There will be writing assignments based on the literature we study.

Grammar - Essentials of grammar are reviewed as needed.

Literature - The study of literature is one of the great privileges of education. Don’t think of this as just reading: it is the study of human beings and their motivations, their spirits, their lives

Quarter Grading Practices - I know you are interested in knowing how to make the grade you want. That’s easy ---- do all the work well.  We’ll talk about this the first week.

There are three categories for grades:

Tests, Projects, Essays – 50%,  tests, essays, long term projects are major.

Quizzes and Daily grades – 40%.    Homework, quizzes, classwork, pop quizzes are minor.

Notebook - 10% - Daily Bellringers and other small writing assignments.

Grading will be completed as quickly as possible, but to grade essays and projects fairly, I must grade them slowly.  If your handwriting is legible, that increases my speed.

Late Work – No late work without talking to me.

Make-up - If you are absent and miss a test or in-class essay, there is one week to do your make-up.  It is your responsibility to arrange a time with me; I won’t remind you.  You may see me any morning before school.  If the assignment takes more than twenty-five minutes to complete, you will need to schedule a time that allows for it. You can also see me after school if you can arrange a timely ride home.

If you are absent when work is due, please send it to me if possible; otherwise I expect it the very next day you return to class, not just the next time you are in my class. If you send information via email, you are at the mercy of the system.  Please be aware of that AND that I still require a hard copy.

Classroom rules - I really have only one rule:  Act as an adult.  This means being on time (in your seat before the bell rings), being prepared, listening to the lecture (really listening), listening to other points of view and being polite to each other. I expect your cell phones to be off (COMPLETELY TURNED OFF, not just on silent) and in backpacks, purses or face down on the desk.  It also means that we follow social distancing and mask requirements – even if we believe they are not necessary. You never know who has health conditions that put them in danger if others around them do not help keep them safe by following these rules.

Being prepared means having your own paper (I like college rule, but it is not imperative.), dark blue or black ink pens (I don’t read anything written in pencil or exuberant ink colors – or on the back side of paper), your text, and your completed work with you. Work due is expected at the beginning of class. You will need a #2 pencil for scantron graded tests.  You can choose pencil or pen for notes because they are just for you.

You are welcome to bring clear plastic bottles of WATER to class. If you refill the bottle during the day, please do so before you come to class. Please don’t bring food or anything to drink other than water. Food draws ants, and that is situation I prefer to avoid.  I appreciate your cooperation.

I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO MAKE ANY AND ALL CHANGES I DECIDE ARE NECESSARY.

PLEASE send your name, email address and telephone number AND your child’s name, student number and telephone number to his/her guidance counselor.  When school went online last year, there were a number of students we could not reach.  If the guidance counselor has the cell phone number, reaching your student will be easier in the event of another move to online.
