MARION COUNTY – Once again, Marion County Public Schools’ Finance Department has the national spotlight on it for the 23rd consecutive year. The honor highlights the district’s efforts when it comes to public accountability and transparency.
Earlier this month, the Chicago-based Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) awarded a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to the MCPS Finance Department, one of only 13 Florida school districts recognized this year. In all, GFOA awarded 229 honors this year to school districts nationwide.
The award is based on the school district’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for fiscal year 2022. This is the highest recognition possible in the area of government accounting and finance reporting and represents a significant accomplishment by a government entity and its management.
The Finance Department oversees the school district’s near $900 million budget and implements financial changes based on current law.
The award recognizes the department’s “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and create incentive for others to read the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report.
For the previous fiscal year (2021), Marion County Public Schools was one of just 21school districts in Florida and 524nationwide that received the award, placing it in the top one percent.
