MARION COUNTY – More students than ever are learning in Marion County Public Schools.

As of December 2023’s official count, the district enrolled 45,651 students, virtually reaching this year’s projection of 45,687 students – the highest ever in the district’s 155-year history.

The latest numbers show the district has grown nearly 9% in just 10 years. This year’s elementary enrollment totals 21,586 students while middle schools enroll 9,917 and high schools 13,032. Alternative sites and special learning centers enroll an additional 1,116 students.

To help with the increasing student growth, MCPS is building three new schools in Southwest Marion County – two elementary and one high school. Elementary schools are expected to open no sooner than August 2025 and the high school tentatively in August 2027. The last new school to open in MCPS was in 2013.

Here is a snapshot of recent enrollment figures for MCPS:

2023-2024 45,651 students

2020-2021 41,279 students

2018-2019 42,925 students
