MARION COUNTY – Reading is essential to every skill in life, yet some people struggle to read even as adults.
To support strong literacy skills and reignite a love for reading, Marion County Public Schools today kicks off “Launching Literacy in the Community” again through a series of videos, online posts, student essay contest, and resources for students, parents, and families.
Ten video segments featuring prominent local residents will emphasize the importance of reading in virtually every career choice. Video participants include National Pitmaster Rashad Jones (kicking off the campaign), College of Central Florida President Dr. Jim Henningsen, Ocala Surgeon Dr. Adetayo Lawal, Ocala Mayor Ben Marciano, MCPS Principal of the Year Michelle Cino, and others.
These videos will play during morning announcements and elsewhere on campuses throughout the district, along with social media platforms and the MCPS YouTube channel through the semester. Messaging also includes favorite books, career advice, and other insight from these video participants.
MCPS students in every grade level can also enter essays about literacy in a contest at [email protected]. Essays must follow specific writing prompts and are due by 5 p.m. on Feb. 23, 2024. Winners will be announced come April 1, 2024.
This campaign kick intentionally coincides with Florida’s statewide “Celebrate Literacy Week” to express the importance of strong literacy skills at every level in society.
