School Board Reconsiders, Sells Old Warehouse for $2 Million

What initially appeared to be a straightforward deal evolved into a transaction yielding less revenue than anticipated for the old warehouse property.

Earlier this year, School Board members agreed to sell the site near Downtown Ocala for $2.4 million. The winning bidder, One Remmington LLC, approached through a third party. Subsequently, the bidder reduced its offer and presented two scenarios for the Board's consideration.

The buyer claimed the old warehouse required $519,213 in repairs, prompting them to lower their offer to $2 million as the first amendment.

The second scenario proposed the School Board finance the deal, allowing the buyer to pay $400,000 at closing and have the Board finance $1.7 million through a one-year note at eight percent interest, with a balloon payment at the end of the term. This seller financing deal would be for $2.1 million.

Board members rejected the seller financing offer and unanimously voted to sell the property for $2 million, still above the listing price and appraised value.

Contracts for Special Services Approved for $8 Million

Summertime school board agendas often contain annual contracts for services, including those serving students with special needs like physical therapy, sign language, hearing assistance, and more.

School Board members approved various contracts with multiple providers worth $8 million at tonight's meeting to benefit students in the Exceptional Student Education program. Providers include:

  • Citrus Hearing Impaired Program Services, Inc. - $1,612,644
  • Community Rehab Associates, Inc. - $795,465
  • Hands Up Holdings LLC dba Hands Up Communications - $896,040
  • Princeton Staffing Solutions LLC - $1,055,909
  • Special Communications LLC - $1,382,898
  • Speech Language Pathologists and Speech Language Pathologist Assistants - $1,552,741
  • Davar Life Therapy LLC - $59,745
  • Physical Therapists - $664,899

These contracts provide services through June 30, 2026, and can be renewed for an extra 30 days for Extended School Year (ESY) services.

Contracts like these help students with disabilities succeed academically by developing skills, reducing barriers to learning, enhancing quality of life, and helping meet goals.

School Resource Officer Contracts to Cost $16.4 Million Over Next Three Years

All public schools in Marion County will continue to have at least one School Resource Officer (SRO) on campus during school hours for the next three years. This decision follows the Marion County School Board's approval of contracts totaling nearly $16.4 million with three local law enforcement agencies:

  • Belleview Police Department: 1 officer at $227,562.

  • Marion County Sheriff's Office: 41 deputies at $10.2 million.

  • Ocala Police Department: 21 officers at $5,946,781.

These contracts, effective through June 2028, ensure that each elementary and middle school is staffed with at least one SRO, while some middle and high schools will have two, and West Port High School will have three.

The School Board considered alternative plans but ultimately chose to renew contracts with local law enforcement agencies, emphasizing the value of community-based safety measures.

This initiative aligns with the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, which mandates a law enforcement officer's presence at every school during operating hours.

School Board members recognize MCPS employees celebrating 30 or more years of district employment with signed certificates and personal introductions.
