Instructional employees earn one (1) day of sick leave per month of employment. Employees are credited with up to four (4) days of advanced sick leave on their first day of employment each school year. They earn one (1) additional day of sick leave at the end of each month until they have earned the maximum number of hours.
Example: A 10-month teacher earns 77.5 hours of sick leave per school year.
All other employees earn one (1) day of sick leave per month of employment. Employees are credited with up to four (4) days of advanced sick leave at the end of their first month of employment each school year. Thereafter, they earn one (1) day of sick leave at the end of the month until they have earned the maximum number of hours.
Example: A 9-month paraprofessional who works six (6) hours per day would have a maximum of 54 hours per school year.
Each school year a maximum of six (6) days from their earned hours may be used for personal reasons. If an employee exceeds six (6) personal days the hours will be considered unpaid leave.
If an employee separates from the district or goes on leave prior to working the months for which sick leave was credited in advance, the sick leave that was provided to the employee at the beginning of their contract will be reduced per State statute. Therefore, any advanced sick leave that was utilized by the employee will be adjusted to unpaid leave.
To inquire about terminal sick leave benefits, please refer to the Collective Bargaining Agreement or contact Holly Sadler. Please note that for employees hired as of 7/1/1984, terminal leave benefits are not paid on sick leave hours that were transferred into Marion County from another Florida school district.
