Does MCPS conduct employment history checks? |
- Yes. This is a condition of employment with MCPS and a requirement by law.

Florida State Statute 1012.27 (6) states: “Before employing a person
in any position that requires direct contact with students, conduct
employment history checks of all the person’s previous employers...”.

Failure to disclose your
four most recent previous employment information may result in an employment offer being rescinded.

Am I required to take a drug test? |

Yes. Marion County Public Schools is a Drug Free Workplace and requires all individuals hired by
Marion County Public Schools to be free of alcohol and controlled substances. Employees must submit
to a pre-employment drug test (per School Board Policy 6.33).

Is there a fee for drug testing? If so, how much? |
- Yes. Applicants are responsible for paying the non-refundable drug test fee of $37.40.

This fee may be payroll deducted if you are hired as a full-time or temporary employee,
with the exception of those hired as a Cafeteria Monitor or with Marion Technical College.

Are there any other fees I should anticipate covering to be cleared to work with MCPS?

Yes. As a new employee, you will also need to pay for fingerprinting and a physical.

The cost for fingerprinting is $89.00. This fee may be payroll deducted if you are
hired as a full-time or temporary employee with the exception of those hired as a
Cafeteria Monitor or with Marion Technical College.
- Physical fees will vary depending upon where the physical is completed.

How long does the preemployment/onboarding process take?
|
The timeline may vary. However, most candidates are onboarded within 7–10 days.

When can I start work? |
It depends. Typically, you can begin work as soon as you have successfully
completed all the pre-employment requirements (e.g., drug screening, fingerprinting,
background check), submitted all required documentation, and been officially
cleared by the Employment Services Division.

Am I eligible for additional compensation for holding a master’s degree or higher?
|
Marion County Public Schools pays a Salary Supplement to all Instructional employees
with an advanced degree who meet the criteria below:
- Master’s Degree – $2,500
- Specialist Degree – $4,500
- Doctoral Degree – $6,500
If you have earned an advanced degree listed in the Guide to Acceptable Majors for
Educator Certification Specialization and hold certification coverage that corresponds
to it, you may be eligible for the supplement.
If you hold an advanced degree from an accredited College of Education and hold
certification coverage that aligns with the advanced degree (e.g., a master's in
teaching science and a Certification in Biology), you may be eligible for the supplement.
