How do I apply for employment with MCPS? Visit www.marionschools.net to view current openings and apply for employment.
I have forgotten the username and password that I created to complete the online application. Who should I contact for help? Contact Employment Services Division at 352-671-7787 for assistance with resetting your password and/or obtaining your username.
How do I request veteran’s preference?
  • To determine if you are qualified, complete the Veterans' Preference Claim Form and attach it to your online application before the posted position's application deadline.
  • Access the Veteran’s Preference Form by visiting Veterans' Preference - Marion County Public Schools .
How will I know if my application was successfully submitted? You can access your online application and review the status at https://www.marionschools.net/departments/careers_at_mcps , or contact the Employment Services Division at 352-671-7787 for additional assistance.
How soon will I be contacted after applying? It depends. Please allow at least three weeks from the date that the position closes. Keep in mind that some positions remain open until filled.
Where do I send the required documentation to start work?
  • Be prepared to provide a current driver’s license or Florida ID, Social Security card and sealed Official Transcripts (if applicable).
  • If you have been offered an instructional position with MCPS, your college or university may send your official transcripts to [email protected].
How do I request accommodation? Applicants/individuals with disabilities requesting accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) may contact Dawana Gary, Director of Equity and Compliance located at 1614 E. Fort King Street, Ocala, FL 3447.

Does MCPS conduct employment history checks?
  • Yes. This is a condition of employment with MCPS and a requirement by law.
  • Florida State Statute 1012.27 (6) states: “Before employing a person in any position that requires direct contact with students, conduct employment history checks of all the person’s previous employers...”.
  • Failure to disclose your four most recent previous employment information may result in an employment offer being rescinded.

What is the background check process?
  • Background checks are completed by our Professional Practices Office.

Am I required to take a drug test?
  • Yes. Marion County Public Schools is a Drug Free Workplace and requires all individuals hired by Marion County Public Schools to be free of alcohol and controlled substances. Employees must submit to a pre-employment drug test (per School Board Policy 6.33).

Is there a fee for drug testing? If so, how much?
  • Yes. Applicants are responsible for paying the non-refundable drug test fee of $37.40.
  • This fee may be payroll deducted if you are hired as a full-time or temporary employee, with the exception of those hired as a Cafeteria Monitor or with Marion Technical College.
Are there any other fees I should anticipate covering to be cleared to work with MCPS?
  • Yes. As a new employee, you will also need to pay for fingerprinting and a physical.
  • The cost for fingerprinting is $89.00. This fee may be payroll deducted if you are hired as a full-time or temporary employee with the exception of those hired as a Cafeteria Monitor or with Marion Technical College.
  • Physical fees will vary depending upon where the physical is completed.
How long does the preemployment/onboarding process take? The timeline may vary. However, most candidates are onboarded within 7–10 days.
When can I start work? It depends. Typically, you can begin work as soon as you have successfully completed all the pre-employment requirements (e.g., drug screening, fingerprinting, background check), submitted all required documentation, and been officially cleared by the Employment Services Division.
Am I eligible for additional compensation for holding a master’s degree or higher? Marion County Public Schools pays a Salary Supplement to all Instructional employees with an advanced degree who meet the criteria below:
  • Master’s Degree – $2,500
  • Specialist Degree – $4,500
  • Doctoral Degree – $6,500

If you have earned an advanced degree listed in the Guide to Acceptable Majors for Educator Certification Specialization and hold certification coverage that corresponds to it, you may be eligible for the supplement.

If you hold an advanced degree from an accredited College of Education and hold certification coverage that aligns with the advanced degree (e.g., a master's in teaching science and a Certification in Biology), you may be eligible for the supplement.

How often will I receive a paycheck?
  • The paycheck schedules can be accessed here. Schedules are based upon position.
  • Contact your designated Payroll Secretary at your site or the Payroll Department if you have additional questions.
When will I be eligible for benefits? Depending upon your hire date, you will be eligible for benefits within 30 days.
What kinds of Professional Development support is available to me? MCPS offers a host of professional development training and Florida Certification test prep—free to employees. Can I be hired to teach out-of-field if I have at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university?
  • Yes. You can be hired out-of-field (i.e., hired to teach a subject you are not certified in) if you are eligible for a teaching certificate in any subject by the Florida Department of Education.
  • You will be required to sign an Agreement to Earn Letter and only teach out of field for one year from the assignment date (determined by hire date). Note: All School Guidance Counselors must be certified in School Counseling.
I am an out-of-state teacher interested in becoming certified in Florida. How do I apply for a reciprocal teaching certificate to secure an instructional position with MCPS? Florida does offer reciprocity with most states.
