Professional Certificate Renewal Process

Florida Educators with a 5-year Professional Certificate must renew their certificate during the last year of the certificate's validity period.

  1. To renew your certificate, you need a minimum of 120 in-service points, or the equivalent in college courses or a combination of in-service points and college courses, including the 20- point teaching students with disabilities requirement.
    1. MCPS offers courses for renewal credit through Canvas. Click to view the Professional Learning Offerings.
    2. You can take courses for renewal credit outside the district through the FDLRS-BEESS PORTAL. Once completed follow these instructions to add the course into Canvas.
  2. Once you have enough renewal credit entered into Canvas, login to your FLDOE account and follow the Renewal Application Instructions.
  3. Current MCPS employees may submit the $75 fee to MCPS via the Payroll Deduction Authorization Form. Charter employees may submit the $75 renewal fee to MCPS via a personal check or credit card.

Note: Endorsements do not require renewal.

NEW 40- POINT READING COURSE REQUIREMENT

If your certificate expires 6/30/2025 or after and you have one of these subjects on your certificate, you will need to complete this requirement. This 40- point course is included in the total 120 required renewal points.

  • Some Reading Endorsement in-service points earned after August 1, 2020, qualify for the renewal requirement.
  • Two 20-point SWD/Reading courses are offered through online independent study courses at FDLRS/BEESS portal and combined will meet this requirement.
    • Reading Difficulties, Disabilities and Dyslexia
    • Structured Literacy through a Multi-sensory Approach
  • The course called Exploring Structured Literacy meets this requirement and may be taken as a facilitated course through FDLRS. This course also meets the 20- point SWD requirement (total of 40 points, not 60).

ALTERNATIVE RENEWAL METHODS EQUIVALENT TO 60 IN-SERVICE POINTS:

  1. Retaking and passing the subject area exam in your certified area during the validity period.
  2. A 3-semester hour course from an accredited college or university in Education or any subject area which the state offers certification.
  3. Teaching a 3-semester hour college level course may be acceptable. (Call ESD Certification for confirmation).
  4. National Board certification will renew the Florida certificate in the subject shown on the valid national certificate.
