MARION COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS SHOW IMPROVEMENT AFTER SCHOOL GRADE RELEASE

45 out of 50 Schools Maintain or Improve Their Annual Grade, 1 Point Shy of “B” District Grade

MARION COUNTY – Florida’s Department of Education (FDOE) released district and school grades Wednesday.  After showing growth and improving scores in nearly every grade level and subject matter tested, Marion County Public Schools earned a “C” district grade, just 1 point shy of maintaining the “B” district grade, with this year’s newly-adopted and more rigorous grading scale.

Key Highlights:

  • Marion County Public Schools increased in nine out of the eleven components when compared to the last time learning gains were calculated after the 2021-2022 school year. The 2022-2023 school year was an Informational Baseline year after the introduction of new Florida standards.
  • Marion County students overall showed significant increases this year in Learning Gains for Math (44% to 48%).
  • Even more significant increases were shown in Learning Gains for English Language Arts (47% to 54%) and Lowest Quartile Learning Gains in English Language Arts (38% to 52%) and Math (43% to 53%), which are at the highest levels since 2016.
  • When it comes to individual school grades, 45 out of 50 schools maintained or improved their school grade over the 2022-2023 school year, which is an increase from 39 after the 2022-2023 school year.
  • A total of five schools maintained “A” grades including Dr. N.H. Jones Elementary, Eighth Street Elementary, Ina A. Colen Academy, Madison Street Academy, and Ward-Highlands Elementary, while Hammett Bowen Jr. Elementary improved from a “B” to an “A”.
  • In addition to Hammett Bowen Jr. Elementary, seven other schools improved at least one letter grade including Greenway Elementary (B), Harbour View Elementary (C), Howard Middle (B), Marion Charter School (B), Reddick-Collier Elementary (C), Sparr Elementary (B), and Wyomina Park Elementary (C).
  • Only one traditional public school earned a “D” grade (Oakcrest Elementary), which is an improvement from three “D” schools in 2022-2023 and two “D” schools in 2021-2022. The other “D” graded school (Ocali Charter High School) and the only “F” graded school (McIntosh Area School) are charter schools.
