Construction Projects Move Forward

School Board members unanimously approved a handful of construction updates at their meeting tonight, including one for South Marion High School, opening this August.

Board members previously decided to finish the third floor in the new school’s main building, adding 700 more student spaces to a school anticipated to open at or beyond capacity of 2,000 in just two months. This additional phase will not be completed in time for opening, however, and adds another $536,650 in design and service fees alone to the school’s current $165 million price tag.

The Board also approved a 14-day extension to a contract for the Lake Weir Middle School replacement project due to delays associated with a sand skink permit and gopher tortoise relocation requirements.

Finally, Belleview Middle School’s heating and air conditioning system will be designed by DDC Engineering, Inc., based in Rockledge, Florida, at a contracted price of $798,000.

UF Athletic Services Contract Continues

The University of Florida will continue providing athletic training services at select MCPS high schools in the new school year.

A $176,407 contract places UF athletic trainers at North Marion High, South Marion High, and West Port High Schools.

MCPS and UF have partnered for several years providing services including planning, organizing, coordinating, and supervising sports medicine programs. MCPS high schools must follow UF Health Orthopedics policies and procedures to ensure consistency throughout programs.

The contract also includes allowances for mileage reimbursement and additional hours for emergency coverage.

Juice Prices Increasing

A $1.575 million contract for 100% fruit juice products gained 5-0 support from Board members.

That price is slightly higher than the $1.3 million spent this year on juice products.

The one-year contract is with M&B Products of Temple Terrace, Florida, and runs through June 30 of next year.

With this approval, students and staff will have juice products available that are obtained at competitive pricing and meet federal regulations supporting national school meal programs. 

Alex Ajuzie (VHS '26) holds his recognition certificate as School Board members, family, and friends surround him. Ajuzie was recognized for missing just two days of school - both excused - during his 13-year MCPS experience. Absent was Nathaniel Mobley (FHS '26), who missed just one day of school during the same timespan.
