Why Attendance Matters
Chronic absenteeism means missing 10% or more of the school year – this includes both excused and unexcused absences.
When students miss a lot of school, it becomes harder for them to learn, keep up with classmates, and stay on track for graduation.
The Impact of Missing School
Missing just 2 days per month from kindergarten through 12th grade adds up quickly:
- 108 hours of missed instruction per year
- Almost one full month of lost learning each year
- More than one full school year of instruction missed over a child’s school career
👍 How Families Can Support Good Attendance
- Make getting to school on time every day a family priority.
- Talk with your child about why attendance matters and how absences can affect learning.
- Encourage your child to share any challenges that make it hard to attend school regularly.
- Have a back‑up plan for transportation or unexpected family issues.
- Try to schedule doctors and other appointments after school when possible.
- Keep track of your child’s attendance and make sure they are in class every day.
- If you need help, contact your child’s school to discuss support and resources available for your family.
