Language Approved for November Ballot
School Board members unanimously approved the language to renew a referendum that will appear on this November’s general election ballot.
The ballot language focuses on renewing the current one-mill referendum, which funds operating expenses including art, music, physical education, library/media services, and vocational positions, along with related programs. It also supports outreach efforts to recruit and retain highly-qualified teachers and contributes to Safe Schools initiatives. New this year is support for early learning needs for the District’s youngest students.
Voters will be asked to renew the referendum originally approved in 2014 and renewed again in 2018 and 2022. The one-mill levy generates approximately $41 million annually. Accountability is ensured through an independent community oversight committee, and the referendum includes a four-year sunset provision.
The approved ballot language reads:
“Shall the Marion County School District’s one mill ad valorem millage be continued, beginning July 1, 2027, and ending June 30, 2031, for necessary operating expenses including safe schools, reading, physical education, art, music, early learning, library/media, and vocational programs; and retaining State Certified teachers and paraprofessionals with oversight of these expenditures by an independent citizens financial oversight committee? ______ Yes ______ No”
The official ballot language now moves to the Marion County Board of County Commissioners for final ballot approval.
