Welcome to AICE English Literature.  This study will prepare you both for college and the world of work.

You took AICE English Language for the last two years.  This class builds on what you learned, but these exams are assigned literature specific.  To do well, you will have to know the material, everything about the poetry, plays, short stories and novels.

Please do not put off assignments (reading and/or writing).  It becomes very difficult to do a good job if you procrastinate, and I DO NOT ACCEPT LATE WORK without a penalty.  I know you have a lot of work from other people, but I will give you plenty of time.  Please get your work to me on time.

Outside reading is required. There is no way to do all that is necessary without your active involvement at home. I recommend that you read the material, reread it with an audio version (usually you can find one at the library or online - I am not suggesting you incur any expense) and then reread it again.  I hope your summer reading was your first read.  The second and third reads are easier.

Essays - There will be frequent writing assignments based on the literature we study.

Grammar - Essentials of grammar are reviewed as needed.

Literature - The study of literature is one of the great privileges of education. Don’t think of this as just reading: it is the study of human beings and their motivations, their spirits, their lives.  It is also the study of the author’s craft; this part of the study is the most critical to this course.

PLEASE BE AWARE:  This is an AICE class, a college level course with a syllabus and reading set by the Cambridge.  Some works contain adult content.  The resource material that I chose to use will be college level. While we will discuss sensitive material with as much delicacy as possible, you should be aware that there are no alternative assignments in AICE English Literature.

Quarter Grading Practices - I know you are interested in knowing how to make the grade you want. That’s easy ---- do all the work well.  We’ll talk about this the first week.

There are two categories for grades:

Major grades labeled Tests, Projects– 60%:  Tests, essays, long-term projects are major.

Minor grades labeled Quiz/Daily Classwork– 40%.:  Homework, quizzes, classwork, pop quizzes are minor.

Grading will be completed as quickly as possible, but to grade essays and projects fairly, I must grade them slowly.  If your handwriting is legible, that increases my speed.

Late Work – No late work without a penalty-- It will not be accepted with a really good reason.  This is because I give you adequate time to complete your work.

Make-up - If you are absent and miss a test or in-class essay, there is one week to do your make-up.  It is your responsibility to arrange a time with me; I won’t remind you.  You may see me any morning before school.  If the assignment takes more than twenty-five minutes to complete, you will need to schedule a time that allows for it.

If you are absent when work is due, please send it to me if possible; otherwise I expect it the day you return to school, not just the next time you are in my class. If you send information via email, you are at the mercy of the system.  Please be aware of that AND that I still require a hard copy.

Classroom rules - I really have only one rule:  Act as an adult.  This means being on time (in your seat before the bell rings), being prepared, listening to the lecture (really listening), listening to other points of view and being polite to each other. I expect your cell phones to be off (COMPLETELY TURNED OFF, not just on silent) and in backpacks, purses or face down on the desk.  It also means that we follow social distancing and mask requirements – even if we believe they are not necessary. You never know who has health conditions that put them in danger if others around them do not help keep them safe by following these rules.

.Being prepared means having your own paper (I like college rule, but it is not imperative.), dark blue or black ink pens (I don’t read anything written in pencil or exuberant ink colors – or on the back side of paper), your text, and your completed work with you. Work due is expected at the beginning of class. You will need a #2 pencil for scantron graded tests.  You can choose pencil or pen for notes because they are just for you.

You are welcome to bring clear plastic bottles of WATER to class. If you refill the bottle during the day, please do so before you come to class. Please don’t bring food or anything to drink other than water. I appreciate your cooperation.

    IMPORTANT:  Keep your mask on.

PLEASE send your name, email address and telephone number AND your child’s name, student number and telephone number to his/her guidance counselor.  When school went online last year, there were a number of students we could not reach.  If the guidance counselor has the cell phone number, reaching your student will be easier in the event of another move to online.
