About Me: My name is Mr. Travis and I am excited about my third year teaching algebra at Lake Weir High School.  I have been married for 17 years and I have 2 high school aged kids.  I am a graduate of Southern Wesleyan University.  I love baseball, Star Wars, my church, Sonny’s BBQ and Cheerwine (a non-alcoholic soft drink).  I look forward to working with you to make algebra understandable in a fun and exciting way.

Course Description: This course is designed to give students a foundation for all future mathematics courses. The fundamentals of algebraic problem-solving are explained. Students will explore: foundations of Algebra, solving equations, solving inequalities, an introduction to functions, linear functions, systems of equations and inequalities, exponents and exponential functions, polynomials and factoring, quadratic functions and equations, and radical expressions and equations.  A passing score on the Algebra 1 EOC is required for graduation, so it is imperative that each student strives hard to learn all of the concepts taught in this course.

Classroom Expectations: We will go by the FOREMOST FOUR!

Prepare before the bell - Class time is limited.  All students are to be completely ready for the day’s instruction by the time the tardy bell rings.

Respect everyone - Students are expected to always treat the teacher, each other and themselves with the utmost of respect.  We will seek to constantly maintain the safety and dignity of all who are in the classroom at all times.

Focus on the task at hand - Students will need to keep their minds engaged on the subject matter of the class each day.  Distractions and daydreaming should be avoided at all times.

Try every assignment - While students may often find an assignment difficult, they are to make every effort to attempt to learn the material.  If they try and fail, they should ask for help.

Learning Platform: I will utilize the Microsoft Teams learning platform for the class.  All assignments will be posted in Teams.  We will also collaborate with Microsoft OneNote for class lectures and discussions.  These will be linked through Teams and easily accessible.

Homework: Homework will be assigned often in order to give the student ample opportunity to practice the concepts covered in class that day.  Homework will be graded both on the basis of effort and accuracy.  All work required to come to an answer must be shown in order to receive credit for the assignment.  All homework assignments will be posted in Teams.  Not every assignment in this class will be graded. But every assignment will affect the student’s grade in some way, so each assignment is to be worked on diligently by the student.

Late Work: Late work will be accepted but the grade is reduced by 10% each day an assignment is late.  Any assignment more than 5 days late will receive a maximum score of 50%.

Academic Honesty:  All students are expected to maintain a high level of honesty in their work.  Any assignment found to have been copied or plagiarized in any way will result in a 0% grade and may receive disciplinary action as well.  This includes, but is not limited to, homework, classwork, projects, quizzes and exams.

Tardies: It is important for all students to be ready to begin class by the time the tardy bell rings each day.  Any student still in the hall or in class and not ready to begin by the time the bell rings will be marked tardy.  The following policy will be used for students when they are tardy:

                1st Offense - Verbal warning

2nd Offense - Written warning sent home to parents

3rd Offense - Call home to parents

4th Offense (and any after) - Referral to student services

Absences: It is the student’s responsibility to find out what assignments, quizzes or tests were missed during an absence.  They can do this by checking in Teams or by asking me when they return.  They will have one day for each day absent to make up their missed work.  Any work not turned in by that time may receive a reduction in grade or a zero.  Students who are suspended must request their work upon receiving the suspension.  They will receive grades commensurate with their level of work on the assignment.  The completed work must be handed in upon the students return from suspension.  Any work not received on the day the student returns to school may receive a zero grade.

Cell Phones: For students to be able to succeed, they must avoid distractions as much as possible.  For this reason, cell phones are not allowed to be out in class at any time.  They must be silenced and out of sight in order for all students to be able to concentrate fully on the day’s tasks.  The following policy will be used for students found with cell phones out in class:

                1st Offense - Verbal warning

2nd Offense - Written warning sent home to parents

3rd Offense - Call home to parents

4th Offense (and any after) - Referral to student services

Discipline:  All school and district behavior policies will be strictly enforced.  In order for the class to run smoothly and all students to have a good opportunity to learn, each student will be expected to follow policies each day and the handbook penalties will be enforced when students do not comply.

Required Supplies: The following items will be needed for this class:

3 ring binder (at least 1 inch - solely for algebra class)

          Notebook paper

          Graph paper

          Pencils

Calculator (This should be a scientific calculator.  I recommend the Texas Instruments TI-30Xa.)

Grading:  In this class we will use the following grading categories and weights:

                       Homework - 10%  /  Classwork & Quizzes - 40%  /  Exams - 50%

In addition, we will use the district grading scale:

                      A - 90-100  /  B - 80-89  /  C - 70-79  /  D - 60-69  /  F - 0-59

Grades can be accessed at any time through Skyward and will be updated regularly.

Help Available: Any student needed help is welcome to contact me from 8-9 AM by phone or by text at any time.  I will respond as quickly as possible.  It is the student’s responsibility to request help if needed.

Parent And Student Feedback: I delight to hear feedback from parents or students on their progress or issues in the class.  Feel free to contact me with feedback at the phone number or email listed above to provide your feedback.

If you want to succeed and you make the decision to give it your all, you will be successful.  I will help you get there and I look forward to watching you grow this year.
