    DESCRIPTION/OBJECTIVES:

    Math for College Readiness course emphasizes understanding of the real number system and knowledge of the fundamentals of Algebra and algebraic skills. It provides a foundation for solving problems involving equations and inequalities of rational, radical, and exponential polynomial functions including, but not limited to, quadratics, exponentials, logarithmics, and complex numbers.

    Grades 9 – 12

    Prerequisites – Algebra 1; Geometry; Teacher recommendation

    MATERIALS NEEDED:

    The following is required for a Math for College Readiness class:

     

    Student Supplies (for use in class & home): (per student)

    Math for College Readiness dedicated Composition notebook (≥100 pages),

    FHS Planner (now online),

    Scientific calculator [i.e. TI-30XS, TI-30XA](graphing calculators aren't allowed on tests),

    Loose-leaf paper (regular or college ruled),

    Graphing paper (1/4-inch),

    Pencils, pens, erasers, highlighters, sharpener, and.

    Student Equipment (for use at home): (per student)

    Access to computer with current Windows-10 (preferred) or Apple operating system,

    Access to high-speed internet for assignments and class information,

    SMS (texting) capable mobile device.

    Classroom Supplies (for classroom use): (per student)

    1 box of facial tissues,

    1 container of Hand-sanitizer,

    3 EXPO Whiteboard markers.

     

    ASSIGNMENT DUE DATES:

    Assignments are expected to be turned-in on or before due dates. Late assignments will be marked “missing” and subject to a 50% deduction in grade for each day after the due date. All “missed” assignments will receive a grade of 0%. If you know you will miss an assignment, make arrangements ahead of time with the instructor.

    THERE WILL BE NO LATE PAPERS ACCEPTED FOR PROJECTS AND FORMAL ESSAYS.

     

    MAKE-UP WORK POLICY (for excused absences only):

    Students will be expected to make up work they have missed within the same number of days the student was absent. It is the responsibility of the student to check the “Past Assignments” column for this course on the instructor’s FHS website upon their prior to their return to school for any missed work. No make-up work is allowed for unexcused absences.

     

    EXTRA CREDIT:

    EXTRA CREDIT is just that, extra. If a student has any “missed” assignments within the current grading period, that student is not eligible for any “extra” credit work. Extra credit assignments are solely at the discretion of the instructor and MUST be turned-in on or before the due date to receive any credit. Extra credit assignments may/may not be posted on the instructor web site.

     

    GRADING/EVALUATION:

    Every assignment that we will complete in this class is important. However, some assignments will demand more time, work, and thought for you to complete. For this reason, each assignment is weighted accordingly. The grade you receive depends on the QUALITY of your work and your participation in class. Grades are posted weekly. If there is a question and/or concern about the grade, see your instructor after class, or before or after school. Grades will not be discussed during class.

    OFF-CAMPUS STUDENT ACTIVITIES AND ISS:

    Students must ask for work in advance should they be given ISS, or miss class due to a student activity or preauthorized absence. This policy exists because students know, in advance, that they will be missing class. Likewise, ISS or a student activity does not excuse a student from a due date. If the student will not be on campus the date that an assignment is due, the assignment is then due before he/she leaves for the activity and must be turned-in.

     

    COMPUTER ACCESS:

    Computer and internet access is a requirement for the Algebra 2 (Honors) course. The Student Portal provides online access to several Microsoft Office applications for use in accessing school and class related files. To help students who do not have access to a computer at home, Forest High School’s media center has computers available for students’ use before school beginning at 7:30 a.m. and after school until 3:30 p.m. In addition, Marion County Libraries have computers available for library members (free memberships available). Students will be given ample notification of essays and/or projects.

     

    CLASSROOM CELLPHONE POLICY:

    As a matter of respect and maturity, every student is expected to be in control of their cellphone use at all times. Inside the classroom, you are not permitted to use your cellphone for any reason unless directed by the instructor. You must keep your cellphone and other mobile devices in OFF or SILENT mode at all times, and out of sight of yourself and others. If you have earbuds, air pods, or any similar devices hanging from your ears, it will be assumed they are connected to your cellphone, and they must be removed.

    Occasionally cellphone or other mobile devices may be used for classroom activities as directed by the instructor for interactive learning. These times will be clearly identified prior to permission for use being granted. 

     

    CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM:

    Academic cheating entails any form of academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, preparing homework, taking tests and quizzes, preparing reports and projects - GENERALLY PASSING OFF ANOTHER PERSON'S WORK AS ONE'S OWN OR KNOWINGLY ALLOWING SUCH MISREPRESENTATION (such as giving someone your work to copy). ANY TYPE of cheating or plagiarism will result in a zero on the assignment.

     

    BEHAVIOR / RULES:

    A student cannot interfere with the right of other students to learn and therefore must show respect to other students and teachers. Other standards for appropriate behavior include attentive participation in class, i.e., no sleeping, disruptions, unnecessary talking or movement, or leaving materials at home.
