A Little About Me
Degrees and Certifications:
Mrs. Digna Smith
¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a mi clase!
Welcome to my Spanish Class! I was born and raised in Central America in the country of Panamá. Before moving to the states I lived in Panamá for 30 years. After coming to the states, I found my passion for teaching and now I have over 16 years of teaching experience. I will show my students the importance of knowing the second largest language in the United States, and how knowing Spanish greatly enhances their resumes when applying for their future carries.
My goal as your teacher is to help you succeed in Spanish. I want the best for my students, and in order for them to be successful in my class they will need to express themselves in Spanish. This will happen through verbal communication, writing, and reading in the targeted language.
I love to speak Spanish when possible due to Spanish being my native language, and I am excited to have the opportunity to teach all my students here at Lake Weir High School this beautiful language. I wish the best for my students and look forward to this coming up school year.
My Syllabus and Expectations
Marion County Public Schools may record online classroom sessions utilizing third-party platforms (Zoom, Google Classroom, etc.). These recordings will only be used for educational purposes and may be shared on other learning platforms. If you do not want your child’s image or identifying information recorded, utilize your device/platform controls to stop the camera feed from your device.
Pre-IB Spanish 2
- To continue to be successful in Spanish 2, time and attention is required.
- This class is being presented in a blended classroom format. That means that you will be given assignments to do at home on-line that will prepare you for the next day’s lesson (15-30 minutes nightly). You can expect there to be quizzes in class to see if you did the preparatory work the night before.
- In class, you are expected to participate fully in all speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities. You are also expected to have all of your classroom supplies with you each day (see supply list). You are expected to stay in your assigned seat at all times, keep your hands and feet to yourself, and keep your voice at a reasonable volume when talking activities are being done.
You are responsible for obtaining any work missed when you are absent (check website, Google classroom or email me). Please do not ask me in class for work that you have missed while absent.
IB Español IV
Using an integrated approach, students will be exposed to the four key elements of the foreign language learning: listening, speaking, reading and writing. During class, Spanish is only to be spoken at all times. You will lose points in the speaking category if you do not address your peers and teacher in the targeted language. Remember that practice makes you better at speaking the targeted language. If you do not speak, you will not get better at it. Also, only one warning will be given if Spanish is not the language used to communicate in the classroom or with me. After the first warning, points will be deducted from your Speaking grade.
IB Español V
Using an integrated approach, students will continue their final year being exposed to the four key elements of foreign language learning: listening, speaking, reading and writing in depth. During class, Spanish is the only spoken language at all times. You will lose points in the speaking category if you do not address your peers and teacher in the targeted language. Since this is your 4th year in Spanish IB, you will need to write a written paper as part of your exam. Each student will also have what’s called oral presentations. These oral presentations will be recorded due to this being an IB requirement.
I expect all the language spoken to be in Spanish. The class is converse in Spanish and Spanish is the medium for communication! A weekly participation grade will be given for speaking Spanish at all times. Only one warning will be given, if Spanish is not the language used to communicate in the classroom or with me. Afterwards, your grade will be lowered as you will lose points every time you do not address your peers or the teacher in the targeted language.
