  • For the month of May, you will be reading a novel and completing work related to it. There are six novels available for you to choose from. All of the novels are by American authors and are public domain works; they are all available for free online.

You may read or listen to them in any format you wish, but you must use a complete copy, so no abridged versions, reworked young adult versions, or films. Each week you will have a new assignment for your novel.

Here is the list of novels you may choose from along with a brief synopsis of the story and a link to the free downloads available on Project Gutenberg.

The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane

A gripping story about The Civil War and its consequences for a young soldier.

    Moby Dick by Herman Melville

An allegory about one man’s obsession with a fearsome whale and the madness that follows.

    Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton

A strange narrative about the failings of people and the transience of love.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

A coming-of-age tale dealing with friendship in the face of intense adversity.

The Turn of the Screw by Henry James

A dark, cryptic story about insanity or ghosts, or possibly both.
