“Somehow it’s ok for people to chuckle about not being good at math. Yet if I said ‘I never learned to read,’ they’d say I was an illiterate dolt.” ~ Neil DeGrasse Tyson

Course Description:

In 6th Grade Math, students will focus on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking.

Course Goals:

Students who complete this course successfully will be able to:

• Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.
• Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions.
• Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers.
• Apply and extend previous understanding of arithmetic to algebraic expressions.
• Reason about and solve one-step equations and inequalities.
• Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables.

Guidelines for Success:

1) Come to Class Prepared: Come to class with writing instruments and paper, as well as a mental attitude that says you are ready to learn.

2) Respect Each Other: Everyone is equal in this class. Work and Support each other in everything you do.

3) Know Your Worth: Everyone has a value, have pride in yourself and your ability to learn. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.

Course Policy and Information for Students:

1) General Class Rules

Respect Each Other: Insults, name-calling, and rudeness are not allowed. Be on time and in your seat working on your bell work when the bell rings. Stay in your seat, do not mess with others stuff, do not invade others space, be honest, and no speaking when others are speaking.

Bullying: ABSOLUTELY NO bullying allowed at ANY time in this classroom.

Food/Drinks/Gum: Small snacks are allowed as long as they are QUIET. Drinks are allowed if they have a lid. NO GUM EVER.

Bathroom Passes: Students will be given 12 bathroom passes per quarter. To go to the bathroom they must turn one in for the bathroom pass. No breaks in the first or last 10 minutes of class and only one student may be out at a time.

Leave it like you found it: Neither your teacher nor the custodians are your maids, you are expected to keep the classroom clean and orderly. No graffiti on desks, no leaving physical items in the class, throw away your trash. ABSOLUTELY NO GLITTER IN CLASS.

2) Attendance Policy

Be on time for class, on time is defined as when the starting class bell has rung, and I, the teacher, have submitted the role. If a student comes in after I, the teacher, has submitted the role, that student must get a late pass or tardy pass. Students may also not leave early, unless called by the office, if they leave early without a valid reason they will be counted as tardy for that day.

3) Late Work / Extensions

Late work will be accepted until 2 weeks PRIOR to the end of the quarter (Sep. 26th, Dec. 5th, Feb. 28th, and May 14th), but the highest a student may receive is 75% when turning in late. Extensions may be granted for certain circumstances and will be given on a case by case basis, as each students needs and circumstance will be different.

4) Missed Exams / Quizzes

If a student misses a quiz, they are expected to make it up when they return. They may take the quiz at the end of the class period, or come in during lunch or before school. If their absence is excused they will suffer no penalty, if it is unexcused the highest grade a student may receive is an 80%.

If a student misses a Test or Exam, they are expected to make it up when they return. If their absence is excused they will suffer no penalty, if it is unexcused the highest grade a student may receive is an 85%.

5) Requests for Feedback or Revisions

Students may ask me, the teacher, for feedback or revision help on any assignment, including their quizzes and tests, with the exception of the EOC/DEOC. Students will have time before school, during lunch, or at the end of the period to consult about their grade. Based on their grade and circumstances the student may be able to revise their assignment with no penalty to their grade. All students may revise their assignments for extra credit, however that extra credit will be added to the overall grade not for that assignment.

Students may NOT come in during another class to ask about their grades as that will disrupt the class in progress.

6) Technology Policies

The students will do Khan Academy at several points during the year, they will be expected to follow a digital etiquette policy that includes: no foul language online, going to the websites assigned to them, staying on task, and no off-task activities.

Phones must be off and away when the teacher is lecturing, you may have your phones on when doing class/group work. If listening to music you MUST have headphones and have the volume on low.

Students MUST cite their sources when doing their projects, also any outside information must be cited as well. All students are expected to be polite and courteous, but also mindful of citing information. Students without citations may be told to find a citation, or if it is a paper or other assignment to get the citations or fail the assignment.

Students may not use notes or textbooks on quizzes or exams unless told so just prior to the quiz or exam (i.e. during instructions). Students may not talk during quizzes or exams until the last one is turned in. Students who do either will risk having their test/quiz taken and a zero recorded in their gradebook, and depending on the intensity of the offense, they may also be written up.

8) Mental Health Policy

My students’ mental health is the utmost importance to me. I will not tolerate any bullying, intolerance, or any remarks that could be construed as racist, sexist, ageist, ablest, or any other type of derogatory remarks. My classroom is a safe place for anyone and everyone. If any student needs help, my door is open, and I will help to the best of my abilities.

Required Texts/Materials/Equipment:

Textbook/Workbook: enVision Florida Mathematics 2020 Grade 6 (will be assigned to students in the first week of school)

1 inch Binder with 4 dividers to make 4 distinct folders (bell ringers, notes, vocabulary, printed assignments)

Loose-leaf paper for notes (College or Wide ruled or plain/clear paper)

Something to write with that is not bright or glittery (blue/black pen: preferred, pencil and eraser: Extremely preferred)

I don’t wish for any student to fail, however I will not just ‘give’ grades to students, they must be EARNED by the students according to the level of effort put into class assignments and assessments. If a student misses class, it is THEIR responsibility to make up the assignment or a replacement assignment. Extra Credit will be offered throughout the class, and it is highly encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities.

For major assessments (Tests/Quizzes) students will be graded on a curve. I will take the highest students grade and subtract it from 100, whatever is left will be added to all the students’ grades (example: Highest score is 95. 100 – 95 = 5. Every student will receive a boost of 5 points to their test).

Minor Assignments will be graded within 2 weeks (10 school days) and if below an 80 will be returned to the student for revisions, alongside feedback for the students to gain a better grade.

I will be grading on a percentage scale, as seen below.

Exams: 25% – 7 tests total with 25 questions per test (with 2-3 extra credit questions added)

Assessments: 20% – Students will be given a worksheet problems to take home and complete or be assigned Khan Academy lessons to complete

Homework (Projects): 20% – 4 projects 1 per quarter.

Quizzes: 15% – 20 quizzes with 5 questions each (with 1 extra credit question added)

Classwork: 10% – Students will periodically be given textbook questions to answer either via online or printed text

Notebook: 5% – Students will keep a notebook with all their notes, vocabulary, printed assignments, and bell ringers

Participation: 5% – This will be graded at the end of the quarter and is based on their participation in class activities
