Hello and welcome to 5th grade! I look forward to spending an awesome year together!  Please be sure to read through the information in this newsletter that will answer some of your basic questions about this year. Some classroom expectations are created by the students once we start the school year, so please feel free to contact me with any additional questions.

    CLASSROOM POLICIES

Our classroom will be structured to establish a safe, respectful and engaged learning environment, which requires that students show:

    1.      Respect:  We will respect all people and all things.

    2.      Responsibility: We will be responsible for our assignments and our choices.

    3.      Honesty: We will be truthful in all that we do.

    4.      Character:  We will strive for great personal character.

     Classroom Rules

    1.      Talk when it is your turn.

    2.      Follow directions the first time.

    3.      Listen when others are speaking.

    4.      Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

Students are expected to follow classroom and school rules/expectations to provide a safe and effective learning environment.  The following is the procedure that will be followed to maintain an appropriate atmosphere for learning.

     1.      Warning

    2.      Time Out (Teacher choice-student reflections)

    3.      Parent Contact

    4.      Administration Referral *

    * Some behaviors may warrant an immediate referral (see student handbook).

    Behavior

Aside from our school wide Positive Behavior Support (PBS), students will have incentives in the classroom.

Example Rewards: Lunch with a friend/teacher, individually wrapped candy, special chair, etc.

    Class Communication

The majority of parent communication will be sent via e-mail, Class Dojo, and through our class website. If you do not have access to an e-mail account or cell phone with texting capabilities, please notify me and I will be certain that the paper copies are sent home.  If your e-mail address changes, please let me know as soon as possible.

    Parent Portal and Student Progress

If you haven’t already, you need to sign up for the Parent Portal.   There, you will be able to track your child’s grades and progress, so that there are no surprises when report cards come home. If you have a question about a particular grade or assignment, please e-mail me and I will respond as soon as possible.

    Classwork/Homework

Students will need to bring their binder to and from school daily. Please look for useful resources and student passwords to access materials that support 5th Grade Florida Standards.

The District expectation is that your child reads a minimum of 20 minutes every day at home. This can be out loud to you or another adult, read silently to themselves or you read it aloud to them.  Additional home learning experiences will be communicated through your child’s take home binder and planner. Depending on the assignment, I will communicate via email/Class Dojo. Please go through your child’s binder daily to ensure they are communicating important information and returning graded papers.

     Parent Volunteers

In order to partner with you in the education of your child, the teachers and administrators of MWE strongly encourage parental partnership.  Your help allows us the freedom to enrich your child’s learning experiences.  Remember that all completed volunteer forms should also have a copy of your driver’s license attached.

Thank you for partnering with me in your child’s success!
