The Career Academy is always looking for dynamic business partners who are interested in hosting a Guided Workplace Learning student. Guided Workplace Learning is a cooperative learning program where high school students get exposure to on-the-job training, networking and opportunities to utilize soft-skills in a real-world environment.
The GWL program requires students to participate in approximately 67.5 hours a semester or 18 weeks. Generally students can earn these hours in just 4-5 hours of training a week. This can be done in a number of ways depending on the student and employer availability.
GWL can be a paid or unpaid internship. Those in paid internships must work for a company that has workman's compensation.
What is your role as a potential employer? There is a one-page agreement to sign, a short meeting with the GWL teacher at your place of work to complete a short "plan," a signature twice a quarter on your student's hour log sheet and a quarterly evaluation. Other than that, you are to simply work off the plan to facilitate the growth of the student. The ultimate goal is for the student to learn and for you to have a positive addition to your team.
