Sick Leave Bank
The Sick Leave Bank was adopted by the School Board for all employees in 1987. During that time we have had 8,997 employees join the Bank with a total of 159,442 hours of sick leave. However, due to death, terminations and retirements we only have 2,662 active employees enrolled in the Bank. Since the inception of the Bank, the Sick Leave Bank Committee has granted 153,177 hours to members in need of assistance.
The Bank has one enrollment period per year to coincide with Annual Benefit Enrollment each Fall, making the memberships effective date the following January 1st, with eligibility to use the Bank effective February 1st. (The 2020 Enrollment Dates are October 7 - November 8, 2019.) You will have an opportunity to join the Bank if you meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Must be a regular full-time employee; and
- Must have been a full-time employee for one (1) year or more; and
- Must have a minimum of three (3) days of accrued sick leave as of the last payroll run in December of the given year.
- All requirements must be met as of December 31, 2019.
(If you are already a member of the Bank you do not need to join again.)
The Sick Leave Bank exists via pooled sick leave hours contributed by employees. Employees joining the Bank will be required to contribute one day of sick leave to the Bank (not one day per year). If the Bank's total sick leave hours reduce to 100 days (approx. 800 hours) the membership would be requested in writing to give an additional day. (The need for replenishing the Bank currently arises about every 3 years.)
When a participating employee uses all of their accrued sick leave for a catastrophic illness or injury (life threatening), they are eligible to request leave from the Bank. Sick leave requested from the Bank must be approved by the Sick Leave Bank Committee. After approval by the Committee the employee may be eligible for up to sixty (60) days of paid sick leave.
If you have any questions or would like to request a Sick Leave Bank form please contact the Risk Management Department at 671-6910. (Also, Sick Leave Bank Guidelines are posted on the Employee Portal/Risk Management Site for reference.)
