MATH TIP
MATH Tip for your 1st grader. This will help your child as he/she progresses through school as well as in the day to day life of adulthood.
Start practicing having your child notice ways to make a ten (2+8, 6+4, 3+7; etc.). Students can use this knowledge to help know what the sum of 12 +8 because they know that 2+8 = 10. Similarly, another mental note is that 12 is 2 more from 10 so then if 8 more is added that would equal 20.
Knowing the facts of 10 will also help in subtraction. For example, 14 – 8. The number 14 is 4 from 10, so take away 4 to decompose the problem 14 – 4… and then take another 4 away to equal the difference of 6. I know this concept is difficult; however, we can begin these discussions and noticing’s. This will be what the math discussions will entail throughout the week. Starting this discussion at home will reinforce what we are learning in 1st grade math.
Please if any questions just email me and I will call you to explain better. :-)
