English I Honors
PURPOSE OF COURSE
English I Honors is a preparatory class for students with high language skills and work ethic. The purpose of the class is to help students advance in the discipline of English so he or she will be prepared for the Advanced Placement level in their junior and senior years. (The Advanced Placement test at the end of each year can give students college credit.) Because of the intensity of the course, students must be prepared to put in extra hours to be successful. This challenging course will prove to be a very rewarding experience for the student.
The English Honors class provides instruction in language focusing on reading, writing, speaking and vocabulary. The course emphasizes analysis, critical thinking skills and composition based on assigned literary genres including short story, nonfiction, drama, poetry, and the novel. Daily reading assignments followed by discussions, quizzes, and tests are utilized to achieve this objective. New vocabulary will be introduced throughout the year. There are opportunities for formal and informal oral presentations and development of the critical skills of listening and observing.

The following is required for class: daily planner, a three-ring notebook (1 inch minimum) with 5 dividers, pens, pencils, loose-leaf paper, a highlighter, and white-out. Donations of any of the following would be greatly appreciated: tissues, scissors, computer paper, magazines throughout the school year (not older than a month please).
Every assignment that we will complete in this class is important. However, some assignments will demand more time, work, and thought for you to complete. For this reason, each assignment will be weighted accordingly. (see chart) The grade you receive depends on the QUALITY of your work and your participation in class. Grades can be accessed on the Student and Parent Portal. If there is a question and/or concern about the grade, discussion will occur AFTER class, before or after school. Grades will not be discussed during class time.

MAKE-UP WORK POLICY(FOR EXCUSED ABSENCES ONLY!)
Students will be expected to make up work they have missed within the number of days the student was absent. It is the responsibility of the student check the “Make-up Work” binder upon his/her return to school for his or her missed work. No make-up work allowed for unexcused absences.
Assignments are expected to be handed in by due dates. Late assignments handed in within 24 hours of the due date will receive MAXIMUM half credit.
***For essays/projects due dates will be strictly adhered to. THERE WILL BE NO LATE PAPERS ACCEPTED FOR PROJECTS AND FORMAL ESSAYS.
OFF-CAMPUS STUDENT ACTIVITES
Students must ask for work in advance should they miss class due to a student activity. This policy exists because students know, in advance, that they will be missing class. Likewise a student activity does not excuse a student from a due date. If the student will not be on campus the date that an assignment is due, the assignment is then due before he/she leaves for the activity.
There will be several assignments over the course of the school year that students must have access to a computer with word processing and internet beyond the classroom. To help students who do not have access to a computer at home, Forest High School’s media center has computers available for students’ use before school beginning at 7:30 a.m. and after school until 3:30. Also, Marion County Libraries have computers available for library members (free membership available). Students will be given ample notification of essays and/or projects that require the use of a computer.
CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM
Academic cheating entails any form of academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, preparing homework, taking tests and quizzes, preparing reports and projects - GENERALLY PASSING OFF ANOTHER PERSON'S WORK AS ONE'S OWN OR KNOWINGLY ALLOWING SUCH MISREPRESENTATION (such as giving someone your work to copy). ANY TYPE of cheating or plagiarism will result in a zero on the assignment and the student will be placed on probation.
A student cannot interfere with the right of other students to learn and therefore must show respect to other students and teachers. Other standards for appropriate behavior include attentive participation in class, i.e., no sleeping disruptions, unnecessary talking, or leaving materials at home. Students must be doing English work in English class unless instructed otherwise. Be in your seat, ready to work when the bell rings. Please raise your hand to be recognized for a question (or answer). Don't interrupt or talk when someone else is speaking. Silence will be observed during announcements. Students are expected to be courteous to all visitors (student or adult) to the classroom.
Students not understanding materials are HIGHLY encouraged to come in for extra help. I am available for extra help before school (7:45-8:30) or after school 3:00-3:30). Meetings are sometimes occurring during these times, so please check with me for availability. EMIT Study Sessions are held twice a week for students to work in groups on their classwork/homework.
