My class is a language rich environment. Almost every activity is designed to increase skills in communication, whether it is reading, talking, signing, writing, or body language. We will study words and word usage, idioms, and those important 5 "wh" questions. Students will read and analyze non- fiction text in our chapter books for science and social studies. They will also read fiction and poetry. Students will read to themselves, to each other, and have stories read to them. Our class includes students who are hearing as well as deaf, hard of hearing students. ASL is an important part of our class and I have found that even students who can hear still benefit from signing and fingerspelling words and ideas. Don't be surprised if your child picks up some sign language, even if he or she is hearing.
