Mrs. Kapono-Nelson

Aloha!  I am now going on my third year as a teacher at Howard Middle School.  I am a 27-year, veteran teacher having spent 24 of those years at the high school level.  I am looking forward to a great year with my students and getting to know other Howard families.  I am a native Hawaiian, married to a husband of Swedish descent and mother to a daughter from China.  We are all about diversity!

My primary goal, as a language arts teacher, is to help your student become an intelligent and effective communicator both in text and verbally.  I have an intimate knowledge of what expectations face them in high school.  I also bring patience and creativity to the need for solid, higher standardized test scores and how to achieve them.  I expect my students to do their school work to the best of their abilities and give me their best effort both in and out of the classroom.  Positive attitudes, respectful behavior, and an eagerness to learn go a long way in getting the best grade possible within my classroom.

I have a syllabus in place that describes the objectives, rules, materials needed, and grading system for our course.  You may click on the links along the right side of this webpage to find my syllabus, current and past assignments as well as the Internet links that we will be using during this course.  Students in all of my classes will need access to the internet for lessons, practice and to communicate with each other (blogs, projects, etc.).

As you know, Howard students are authorized to utilize the marionstudents.net domain for email and collaboration tools.  8th graders should already have their Marion County email established.  There will be times that assignments will require these for instructional learning.  Students should already have unique username and password to access these tools.  They will have 24-hour access to their grades, electronic storage on the OneDrive, and an email account, along with other features they may explore.  Students may access their accounts from any Internet source.     Free Internet service is available at our Marion County Public Library.  In addition, free WiFi is available in many locations within our community, for your various devices.  You may complete your school work and research utilizing these services.

Thank you for supporting your child’s success, and I hope that my only communication with you will be positive.  Please feel free to contact me at the email or telephone number listed if you have any concerns, comments, or questions.
