    Course Description:

     

    Chemistry I Honors is a rigorous, fast paced course designed to explore chemistry concepts in greater depth. One of the main goals of this course is to help students understand the nature of scientific knowledge and how that knowledge is created and evaluated. To do this, we will focus on the following: Nature of Science, Scientific Measurement, Atomic Structure, Periodic Table, Ionic and Covalent compounds, Chemical Reactions, Mole Calculations, Stoichiometry, States of Matter and Intermolecular Forces, Gas Laws, and Reaction Rates.

    Laboratory investigations are an integral component of this course. These include the use of scientific inquiry, research, measurement, problem solving, laboratory equipment and technologies, experimental procedures, and safety procedures.

    Students in this course are required to complete a science fair project.

     

    Classroom Expectations

    • Be prompt to class
    • Be prepared for class (folder, paper, notebook, pens, etc.)
    • Be polite
    • Be productive
    • Follow classroom procedures.

     

    Students are expected to follow class, West Port high school, and county guidelines for behavior.

     

    Materials needed:

     

    • Notebook with pocket included (college ruled) - I have a five star with a plastic cover durability purposes.
    • Duo-tang folder ( 2 pocket folder)
    • paper
    • Pens/pencils
    • Glue sticks or tape (will be needed throughout the year)
    • Highlighters (at least three different colors)
    • Dry erase marker
    • A scientific calculator (a graphing calculator is not required)

     

    Grading Information:

    You are the individual responsible for the grade you receive. I do not “give” grades, you earn them. Grades will consist of the following:

     

    Tests/ /Projects* (including Science Fair)/Lab Reports – 50%                                                

    Class Assignments/Quizzes – 50%                              

                                            

                                    

     

    Grade Scale: 100-90% = A   89-80% = B   79-70% = C   69-60% = D   59% or below= F

     

     

    *Note: Projects are due on the due dates.

    If a student is absent from class, he/she will be responsible for obtaining make-up work from the teacher and/or make arrangements to complete any missed lab or assessment.

    Extra Help:

     

    I want you to be successful in my class! If extra help is needed, POWER HOUR is a valuable opportunity to reinforce skills, clarify doubts, make-up work, improve your grades, review for assessments, and make use of classroom resources in order to maintain academic success. I will be available during the second half of power hour for help. This year I will be hosting tutorial/study sessions. This is when we review and practice additional problems for those needing additional help or just for reinforcement.
