Welcome to Band
This class is an introduction to wind and percussion instrument methods open to all students. No prior music experience is needed. A student will learn how to play a wind or percussion instrument and the skills to interpret written music through the use of a band method book. Performance in an individual and group setting will be taught. The students will be prepared to join the Concert Band upon successful completion of the course. Students that show significant progress beyond beginning level may be invited to audition to Symphonic Band. Promotion is based on mastery of skills needed to perform intermediate or advanced level literature. Performances beyond school hours are required as part of the class. The required performances are the Winter and Spring Concerts. An optional performance opportunity is to perform at the F. B. A. Solo and Ensemble Music Performance Assessment.
Symphonic Band is open to only the most proficient students who have demonstrated the ability to perform more difficult music. Instrumentation is a consideration when selecting students for Symphonic Band. In addition, a student must have a proven record of reliability and good conduct in order to be considered for Symphonic Band. The skills learned in Beginning and Concert Band are further refined, and additional scales and more difficult exercises are learned. Private lessons are highly recommended. Private teachers can help with preparation for All-District Band and All-State Band auditions, preparation of difficult music, and selection and preparation of Solo and Ensemble music. Students will rehearse after school when necessary to prepare for performances. The required performances will be the Night of the Arts, Winter and Spring Concerts, chamber concert, and the Music Performance Assessment.
Please visit the band calendar for dates and times.
The band room opens at 9:00am every morning except for Friday. Parents may drop students off by the back band room door.
