Mrs. Leah Bender
Hello and welcome to my fellow literature and research enthusiasts!
I am Mrs. Leah Bender, and I teach AP English Literature and Composition, AP Capstone Seminar, AP Capstone Research, and AICE General Paper. My husband, Mr. Roman Bender, is also here at West Port and teaches Geometry. Together, we have three dogs. All of them are rescues and all have literary themed names: Shakespeare (he came from the shelter with this name, so it was meant to be!), Ginny (as in Ginny Weasley from the Harry Potter series), and Frodo (as in Frodo Baggins from Lord of the Rings).
For the last two years, I have been employed by the College Board's Advanced Placement program as an AP English Literature essay reader/scorer in Salt Lake City, Utah as well as remotely from my home computer last year due to the pandemic. These experiences provided me with both a unique insight into what is required to earn college credit on an AP exam, and with a nationwide network of teachers and professors from which to share new ideas and lessons.
I strive to provide a safe, open, and positive learning atmosphere in each course. In my classroom, your opinion is valued, you are safe to express your ideas, you will keep an open mind, you will not simply listen to respond, you will listen to truly understand others' points of view. Here we celebrate and encourage unique individualism and new ideas.
