• Week 1 - November 14, 2016

    This week our class will be focusing on the different ways we can measure time. Time can be measured by a clock, a shadow, and even an hour glass.

    • Comprehension Skill – Character, Setting, Plot: Character
    • Comprehension Strategy – Make, Confirm, Revise Predictions
    • Genre - Fantasy
    • Grammar - Verbs
    • Phonics Skill - Spelling: Long a:  a_e
    • Writing Traits – Word Choice:  Words to Describe Things

    Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.

    Word Workout

    • Words to Know Your will work with your child and make up questions and answers using the vocabulary words
    • Spelling/Phonics: long Help your child make crossword puzzles for pairs of spelling words. This week’s phonic sound is the long sound, as in cakewave, and late.

    Comprehension: character, setting, plot

    Your child will identify the character, setting, and what happens in a story. Then he or she will draw a picture to show the missing part of each story.

     


     

    Week 2 - November 28, 2016

    This week our class will be focusing on how plants change as they grow. We will discuss how plants are living things that need food and water—just like us!

    • Comprehension Skill – Character, Setting, Plot: Sequence
    • Comprehension Strategy – Make, Confirm, Revise Predictions
    • Genre - Fantasy
    • Grammar – Present-Tense Verbs
    • Phonics Skill - Spelling: Long i:  i_e
    • Writing Traits – Word Choice:  Use Specific Words

    Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.

    Word Workout

    • Words to Know Help your child use the words to tell about pictures of plants.
    • Spelling/Phonics: long Work with your child to spell the words, then identify and think of rhyming words. This week’s phonic sound is the long sound, as in kiteside, and fine.

    Comprehension: sequence

    Help your child tell a story in order using the words firstnextthen, and last.

     


     

    Week 3 - December 5, 2016

    This week our class will be discussing folktales. A folktale is a story that has been orally handed down from generation to generation.

    • Comprehension Skill – Character, Setting, Plot:  Cause & Effect
    • Comprehension Strategy – Make, Confirm, Revise Predictions
    • Genre - Folktale
    • Grammar – Past and Future Tense Verbs
    • Phonics Skill - Spelling: Soft c, Soft g, dge
    • Writing Traits – Word Choice:  Use Specific Words

    Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.

    Word Workout

    • Words to Know Help your child use the words to read a story starter and to make up a story.
    • Spelling/Phonics: soft and You will help your child complete a word find. This week’s phonic sounds are soft c, soft g, and -dge, as in the words nicepage, and edge.

    Comprehension: cause and effect

    Help your child look at pictures of events, then complete sentences that tell about the causes of those events.

     


     

    Week 4 - December 12, 2016

    This week our class will be focusing on how life is different today than it was long ago. We will discuss how toys have changed and how transportation has changed, as well as how these changes affect our lives today.

    • Comprehension Skill – Connections within Text:  Compare and Contrast
    • Comprehension Strategy –Reread
    • Genre – Nonfiction (Informational Text)
    • Grammar – Is and Are
    • Phonics Skill - Spelling: Long o: o_e; Long u: u_e, Long e: e_e
    • Writing Traits – Ideas:  Focus on a Topic

    Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.

    Word Workout

    • Words to Know Help your child use the words to make up sentences that tell a story about long ago.
    • Spelling/Phonics: long and long Your child will raise one hand if he or she hears a word with long sound, and raise both hands if the word has a long usound. This week’s phonic sounds are long and long u, as in lone and cute.

    Comprehension: compare and contrast

    Help your child compare and contrast ways children traveled to school long ago with today.

     


    Week 5 - January 2, 2017

    This week our class will be focusing on how we get our food. We will also be discussing how growing things are made into food.

    • Comprehension Skill – Connections within Text:  Sequence
    • Comprehension Strategy – Reread
    • Genre -  Nonfiction (Informational Text)
    • Grammar – Contractions with Not
    • Phonics Skill - Spelling: /u/: oo, u
    • Writing Traits –  Ideas:  Give Reasons for an Opinion

    Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.

    Word Workout

    • Words to Know You and your child will discuss each word and use each in a sentence about food.
    • Spelling/Phonics: variant vowel digraphs: ooHelp your child unscramble words to find the correct words on the word list. This week’s phonic sounds are oo and u, as in the words book and put.

    Comprehension: sequence

    Help your child number the sentences in the correct order to show how we get milk.

     


     

    Week 6 - January 9, 2017

    This week our class will be focusing again on the important skills covered during the last five weeks. Here are some activities you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be reviewing and extending.

    • Discuss a movie or television program you have watched together.
    • Write a short review together. Make sure it shows your opinion.
    • Ask your child to present the review to family members.

    Before your child presents the review, discuss this checklist.

    √    Go over your review. Did you include your opinion?

    √    Speak with excitement.

    √    Ask your audience if they have anything to add. 

    Showing interest in your child’s reading, writing, and speaking will help his or her progress during the year.
