Degrees and Certifications:
Bachelor of Arts in History; Teaching Certificates in: Math (grades 6-8), Social Studies (6-12), and Middle Grades Integrated (all Middle School academic subjects).
Mr. John Quiñones
Born to Puerto Rican immigrant parents in New York City, most of my students call me "Mr.Q". I attended Stuyvesant High School (in NYC), New York University, Inter-American University of Puerto Rico and finally St. John's University (New York) where I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.
I have taught Social Studies, English, Life Science and Math at schools in Puerto Rico (10 years), New York (4 years), and Florida (21 years) for a total of 35 years teaching! The Florida schools were Dunnellon Middle, The Villages Charter Middle School, Dunnellon High School and Horizon Academy (7 years). I was a Golden Apple recipient in 2002 (Social Studies) and Florida Excellence in Education Award winner (High School Math) in 2009.
Favorites: The Big Three - "Chocolate, Cheese and Coffee" as well as books (my home is full of books). I also like...chocolate...travel...chocolate... looking for cheap books at yard sales & thrift shops, and...oh yes: CHOCOLATE! I love watching my daughters perform drama and music at the local college, and at Ocala Civic Theatre. I also love helping immigrant students and their families. I have a goal to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle this year (with the exception of chocolate, of course). Lately, my favorite color is purple because I support the American Cancer Society RELAY FOR LIFE. I also sponsor the DRAMA CLUB.
GENERAL GOALS:
1-Increase HAMO students' Standardized Test (FSA MATH & ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS) and US History Final Exam.
2-Train students to use technology.
3-Encourage students to be avid readers.
4-Motivate students to seek higher education in the future (and the 3E's).
5-Develop students' writing skills.
6-Inspire students to be civic-minded critical thinkers.
