Mrs. Marquez de Smith

Degrees and Certifications:

Mrs. Marquez de Smith

Hey There!

My Name is Mrs. Marquez de Smith but that’s way too long, right? So most of my students call me Ms. M or Miss Marquez.   Please call me whichever one works for you! (I even answer to Miss Arrendell but Shh it’s a secret – don’t tell her! LOL)

Guess what? This is my 10th year teaching at Horizon Academy but I have been a teacher in Marion County for 13 years. (Oh My Goodness! That’s probably as long as some of you are old!!) I have taught in a Preschool in New York where I spent a lot of time reminding children to go to the bathroom and wash their hands (not exactly fun but necessary, right?), and I have taught every grade from Kindergarten all the way to 6th grade. I enjoyed teaching every one of those grades BUT my favorite? You guessed it! 5th grade is my favorite.

I was born and raised in New York but not in the city. I am from the suburbs, raised in the town of Deer Park, on Long Island, where the beach was 15 minutes north or south of us. (Being landlocked in Ocala took A LOT of adjusting!!) I went to college in Michigan and loved the area so much I got a job there after college and stayed for a year before returning to New York to do my Masters Degree at Hofstra University.

My parents moved to Ocala 26 years ago and my daughters and I, followed. Since then, Ocala has been home. My oldest daughter graduated from Belleview High School and my youngest attends West Port (Go Wolf Pack!).

Some things about me: I love to learn! Tell me and I am interested but teach me and I am excited! I love to travel and have been all over the world (England, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Canada, Mexico, Anguilla, St Bart’s, and more…..) I play a number of instruments (violin, flute, guitar and more) I sing (acapella is currently my favorite and I prefer singing in a trio). I have poured cement, built furniture, replaced outlets, and I have my own toolbox (OK it’s purple but its mine! LOL) Last but not least I enjoy talking about gross topics (vomit, bugs, flatulence, zombie butterflies and my favorite? The digestive system and waste!!) Why? Well because it grabs and holds a fifth graders attention! If there is something gross that can teach us a fifth grade standard -  LOL, I’m ready!

Life is about learning and enjoying the process. I firmly believe we are imbued with the strength to carry out His purpose for our lives. I look forward to this year and all of the twists, turns and bumps we will face together knowing that we have the same goal in mind; teaching your student to be the best well rounded lifelong learner they can be and having fun doing it! I am just thankful to be a part of the ride!
