• First grade is a very important year in a child's development.  The major foundational skills in reading, writing and math are taught this year.  All subsequent grades build on the skills taught this year.

    Reading and language arts standards cover:

    • key details and using illustrations for key details
    • main idea with details
    • plot, sequence, text features
    • sensory words, point of view, differences between stories and informational text
    • problem and solution
    • theme, compare/contrast, characters
    • author's purpose
    • phonics
    • grammar including periods, commas, question mark, exclamation point, capitalization
    • writing of narrative, informative and opinion pieces using text evidence

    Science standards cover:

    • pushes and pulls, gravity, motion
    • the five senses and exploring the world using the senses
    • plants
    • needs of living things
    • living vs. nonliving
    • young and their parents
    • positive and negative effects of the sun
    • Earth's surface

    Social Studies standards cover:

    • Civics and Government including citizenship
    • Rules and Laws
    • Geography including the use and parts of a map
    • Economics including money, spending and saving, goods and services, consumers and producers
    • American History including American symbols, National holidays, American Presidents and important people from American history

    Math standards cover:

    • Addition and Subtraction within 20, adding within 100
    • Properties of operation
    • adding 3 whole numbers
    • finding unknown numbers in equations
    • understanding the equal sign
    • relating addition to subtraction
    • representing and interpreting data
    • counting and place value
    • counting to 120
    • understanding tens and ones
    • greater than, less than and equal to using symbols
    • compose a ten
    • find 10 more and ten less
    • subtract multiples of 10
    • identify the value of coins, compute value of coins, relate coins to a dollar
    • time to hour and half hour
    • order three objects by length
    • compare lengths
