• Eighth Grade Advanced Band

The objective for this course is to learn the basic techniques to perform on instruments both alone and with others, reading and notating music, as well as to understand the history of music.

The Eighth Grade Advanced Band is open to all LWMS students who are in the eighth grade and have at least two or more years of playing experience on an instrument. It is very important for each student to rent or buy their instrument. Please do your best to rent from a store. At this stage, the students will be learning how to tune and produce good tones. However, most of the larger instruments such as Tubas, Baritones, Bass Clarinet, Percussion Equipment, and Trombones in some cases will be available through the school.

Each band member will be required to pay a Band Fee. This fee is directly related to the cost of our assessment fee for our performance at the Florida Bandmasters Association (F.B.A.) adjudication, some classroom materials, and travel expenses. This year’s fee will be $65.  If paying with a check, please make this check payable to Lake Weir Middle School and enclose it in an envelope with your name and the amount on the front. (You must have your full name, correct phone number and address written on the check.) You pay this fee in installments, however, please try and have all of the fee turned in by October 28.

    Seventh Grade Advanced Band

The course objective is to learn the basic techniques of performing on instruments both alone and with others, reading and notating music, as well as to understand the history of music.

The Seventh Grade Advanced Band is open to all LWMS students who are in the seventh grade or eighth grade, and have at least one year of playing experience on an instrument. It is very important for each student to rent or buy their instrument for this year.  Please do your best to rent from a store. The instrument that you may have used last year that was school owned is most likely not good enough for you to use in the advanced band.  Many of the school owned instruments are not able to tune or produce poor quality of sound.  At this stage the students are learning how to tune and produce a good tone.  However, most of the larger instruments such as Tubas, Baritones, Bass Clarinet, Larger Saxophones (Tenor/Baritone), Percussion Equipment, and for some cases, Trombones will be available to rent from the school.

Each band member will be required to pay a Band Fee. This fee is directly related to the cost of our assessment fee for our performance at the Florida Bandmasters Association (F.B.A.) adjudication, a band polo shirt, the class book, travel expenses, and some classroom materials (Reeds, Valve Oil, and Music). This year’s fee will be $65.  If using a check, please make this check payable to Lake Weir Middle School and enclose it in an envelope with your name and the amount on the front. (You must have your full name, correct phone number and address written on the check). You may pay this fee in installments, however, please do your best to have this all turned in before Oct. 28.

On a side note, we have stopped using our band uniforms and have gone to a band polo shirt, black dress pants, black socks and all black shoes as our performance attire. The band shirt is part of the fee, however, you will need to make sure you child has the other items by our Dec. 10 Christmas Parade.

Seventh and Eighth Grade Percussion Class

The objective for this course is to learn the basic techniques to perform on instruments both alone and with others, reading and notating music, as well as to understand the history of music.

We now offer a percussion class to all seventh and eighth grade students who have at least one years of experience playing percussion in band. This course is going to focus on the fundamental techniques to perform on all percussion instruments.  Students will also spend time learning how to notate percussion music.

Each band member will be required to pay a Band Fee. This fee is directly related to the cost of our assessment fee for our performance at the Florida Bandmasters Association (F.B.A.) adjudication, a band polo shirt, travel expenses, and some classroom materials. This year’s fee will be $65. Please make this check payable to Lake Weir Middle School and enclose it in an envelope with your name and the amount on the front. (You must have your full name, correct phone number and address written on the check.) The director will not take any money unless it is sealed in an envelope. You may pay this fee in installments, however, please do your best to have this all turned in before Oct. 28.

    Beginning Band

The objective for this course is to learn the basic techniques to perform on instruments both alone and with others, reading and notating music, as well as to understand the history of music.

If you are in this class it is because you have little to no musical experience of reading music and performing on an instrument. Some other things you need know about this class is it comes with a $5 lab fee. If paying by check, checks are to be made out to Lake Weir Middle School with Full Name, Phone # and Address written on the check. The purpose of this fee is to help keep a supply of reeds and disinfectant spray we use while trying out instruments.

Each student will be assigned an instrument to play during class as every student will get a chance to try out the brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. The school has a small supply of workable instruments that you may use, however, that will come with a maintenance fee of $50 for the whole year. You may pay this fee by Semester. (Fall Semester $25-Spring Semester $25).  Please be aware that any repairs will be your responsibility to fix. The maintenance fee will only apply to any tune ups that will be needed at the end of the year and not to any damages you have caused while in your possession (example of fee…pad replacement on a clarinet at end of year). However, I highly recommend that you try your best to rent from a store. The instrument you receive will have a better chance of working properly, and if something should happen, most stores have an insurance policy. Below, you can find a list of music stores we have used in the past. However, if you would like you may use another option.
