Degrees and Certifications:
Mr. John Jacobs
Family: I've been married for 28 years. Our son is a junior in college and our daughter just graduated high school this past year.
Education: I have a B.A. degree from the University of South Florida in Tampa. My undergraduate coursework included engineering, social sciences, and business/economics.
Professional: I worked in banking management for over 15 years before becoming a teacher. I know our community and how the business world works. I know what it takes to be successful in a trade or career. Each year I help my students get from where they are now to where they want to be. If they don't know (yet) what they want to do, I teach them how to become self-aware of their strengths and how to develop their skill sets. Not everyone knows in 9th grade what they want to do, but I'll show them how to build a solid foundation for the person they want to become.
This is my eighth year teaching at North Marion High School. Before North Marion, I taught for two years at Marion Technical Institute and was a substitute teacher in public and private schools here in Marion County. I previously served for two years as president of an accredited private school/homeschool organization and also served as a Sunday School teacher at my church for nine years.
Personal: I love STEAM ("Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math") and I love helping students learn math, whether they enjoy math or not, whether they have excelled at it or struggled with it. Math is the language that describes the physical universe and I enjoy seeing the look on students' faces when they have just taken a peek into a world that was previously unknown to them. We work hard in class, but we have fun, too. I am a nerdy math teacher who tells corny jokes. I use many examples to keep the lessons relevant to the lives of my students, and I often teach by telling stories. I promise you that I'll do my best to make our year together a time of fun learning!
