Welcome to Mrs. Kernan's Class

  • Fort McCoy School

Welcome to First Grade!  First grade is such an exciting year.  Students learn to read, write and many math concepts.   Our main curriculum is the Core Knowledge Language Arts and Go, Math!

I would like to share with you my classroom management system and classroom routine.   Our class uses the Big Three behavior system.

    1.  Do what’s right.

    2.  Do your best.

    3.  Treat others the way you want to be treated.

Conduct grades are E, S, N and U.  Each day your child will begin with a green card.    The children that stay on green all week will earn an E in conduct for the week.   If your child has to add their card to yellow then their folder will be marked.  One or two yellow cards for the week will earn an S in conduct for the week.  If your child adds their card to red or has three yellow cards during the week, then their conduct grade will be an N.  If a child continues to misbehave after adding their red card, I will call home and/or refer the child to the dean.  A behavior report is kept in the front of your child’s work folder showing your child’s behavior for the week (s).  Please sign this report at the end of each week.  I try to always keep parents informed about their child’s behavior and progress in class.  Children can also earn tally marks for their group for good behavior.   I like to reward children, for example, Cougar Cash and believe that positive reinforcement is very important.

The work folder is sent home daily.   Please help your child bring their folder and reading bag to school each day.  As a consequence for not bringing their materials, they will add their yellow card.  If for some reason, they cannot bring their materials, please call me or send a note in with your child.  The folder contains important papers, behavior page, graded work and notebook paper that we can use to write to each other.  I also send home a weekly newsletter on Mondays.    If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to write to me or call me.

First grade uses the following grading scale:

    E - 90-100

    S - 80-89

    N - 70-79

    U - 69 and below

I am excited about beginning a new school year.  I look forward to partnering with you to insure your child has a great year.

  • Students should wear tennis shoes daily as they will be going to P. E. everyday.
