Mrs. Cate Martin
Mrs. Martin has been the Director of Dance at BHS since 2003. She was named Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year in 2004, BHS's 2005 Rookie Teacher of the Year and BHS's Teacher of the Year in 2008. From 2013-2014 Mrs. Martin was a Content Reviewer for the Fine and Performing Arts Assessment Project based out of Polk County. This project was responsible for creating the testing items found in the common end of course exams item bank. This projected was funded under a Race to the Top grant.
In 2003, Mrs. Martin earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in Dance Choreography and Performance from Florida State University. While there she was assistant to Jawole Zollar, Artistic Director of Urban Bush Women, and Lynda Davis, Artistic Director of Dance Repertory Theatre. Mrs. Martin was a member of Dance Repertory Theatre for two years. She also taught ballet, modern dance and jazz in the non-major dance program.
While a student at Cedar Crest College, Mrs. Martin spent four years dancing with the CCC Dance Company and served as the Dance Company Manager for 3 years. She also was assistant to Carol Welton Kelly, the Director of the Dance program. In the summer between her junior and senior year she studied at the American Dance Festival and was lucky enough to study Limon technique from Betty Jones.
For two years she Directed her own dance company, CMdanceExperience. In recent years Mrs. Martin has danced with Falling Upward Dance Collective under the direction of Rebecca Lott.
Mrs. Martin brings her love of dance to her students and takes great pride in seeing them excel. Not only is she the Director of Dance at BHS but she is also the Artistic Director of the Diamondback Dance Company and sponsor for the National Honor Society for Dance Arts.
