We're Wild about Reading!
The mission of the Maplewood Elementary Media program is to ensure that the students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. This is accomplished by providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats; by providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information and ideas; and by working with other teachers to design learning strategies to meet the needs of individual students.
- Each student in kindergarten may check out 1 book at a time.
- Each student in 1st through 5th grades may check out up to 2 books at a time as long as they do not have any overdue books or owe a fine.
- Students may check out books for 2 weeks at a time. Books may be renewed once if necessary.
- There are no fines for overdue materials; however, students must pay for lost or damaged books.
- Students will be offered a second chance book if they have overdue, lost or damaged books that have not been returned or paid for.
- Students come to the library once a week with their class and may come daily during open checkout.
Book donations are always appreciated, especially if books are in good condition and are hardcover books. Depending on the need, gift books may be added to the media center collection, given to teachers, or donated to students.
Maplewood hosts two Scholastic Book Fairs per school year. These fairs, which are a tremendous fund raiser for the Maplewood Media Center, provide students with the opportunity to buy reading materials for their home libraries.
The book fair is held in the fall and spring of each school year. This year's first book fair is currently scheduled for October 28-November 1, with a special Family Night on Friday, October 25th from 5:00 PM-7:30 PM during Maplewood's annual Fall Festival. Please come out and support the Maplewood Media Center while encouraging your child's love of reading. Our second book fair will take place this spring during our Arts and Science Night.
If you would like to volunteer to help out at the fall book fair, please call 671-6826 and let Ms. Jappinga know that you would like to help. Thanks!
Morning News Show
The MWES Morning News Show airs daily at 7:40 AM. Our studio broadcasts live announcements each morning. The MWES Morning News crew consists of 6 5th grade students who announce the news, introduce new books, run the cameras, control the sound, and run the video switcher. Multiple crews will get an opportunity to work on morning announcements throughout the year. These students are nominated by their teachers based on their presentation skills and how they exemplify Maplewood's Big 3 by being responsible, respectful, and ready. Students must also demonstrate teamwork, have good attendance, and make good grades to represent Maplewood on the morning news crew.
The purpose of our show is to let the school know about daily and future happenings and schedules. In addition, special guests are recognized each week for their accomplishments and get to lead the school in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Teachers, if your class is doing something special which you would like highlighted on morning announcements, be sure to let Ms. Jappinga or one of the crew members know, and we will try to feature your class on the show!
FRA Children's Book Award
The FRA Children's Book Award is a program sponsored by the Florida Reading Association and is for students in Pre-K through second grade. Students read or have read to them eight quality books and then vote on their favorite book. The votes are tallied at the state level, and the author of the winning book receives recognition.
Students in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade have the opportunity to read or listen to recent literature that is considered the best in the state. Students also learn about the importance of voting. Below are the 2018-2019 Florida Reading Association's Children's Book Award Nominees for Pre-K through Grade 2:
